Upscale pub dining at The Drumming Snipe

By Sara Hardy– 31 October 2020
What I loved about The Drumming Snipe

There were so many things I loved about The Drumming Snipe, but what really sets this place apart is the exceptional quality of the food together with incredibly warm hospitality.

Worth paying a babysitter?

Absolutely, we took the boys for Sunday lunch and it was fabulous. However Mr H and I are already planning our return one evening as there is so much on the menu (and the wine list) that we are keen to try!

Well thought out British dishes with incredible flavours, beautiful presentation in a sophisticated but relaxed pub setting.

Value for money: 10 out of 10

It is marginally pricier than your standard local pub, but there is absolutely nothing standard about The Drumming Snipe.

I have to admit, I’ve been excited to try this place since it opened on 31st January. The pub is co-owned by Jamie Dobbin, former head chef of member’s only The Club at The Ivy, and James Lyon Shaw, former head chef of a number of trendy London restaurants including Bistroteque and The Well. For this dynamic duo to set up shop and open the doors to their beautiful refurbished pub right on our doorstep is quite a privilege.

Jamie sets the tone for the Drumming Snipe (and his other pub, the Greene Oak in Windsor) perfectly in his bio, saying

“I’ve had the opportunity to learn the techniques and cooking style of fine dining, but I wanted to use those principles to create a stunning, simple menu. I wanted to allow the humble ingredient to have its place on the plate – without airs and graces and pomp and ceremony.”

The Drumming Snipe has the winning combination of excellent food, an impressive wine list and a beautiful setting. You will feel cosy in the wood panelled bar with open fireplaces and exposed brickwork, alternatively you could head out through the sleek bifold doors to the covered terrace and snuggle up under a blanket or near one of the plentiful gas heaters. Christophe, Manuel, Briony and Alena looked after us and our two young children brilliantly. With patience, a sense of humour and a huge amount of professionalism we felt comfortable and relaxed.

The Menu:

We tried the beef shin croquettes with truffle mayonnaise and Brixham king scallops, slow cooked pigs head and pickled apple, both of which were delicious and flavoursome. We followed with a Sunday Roast which was every bit as good as you might imagine. The boys had a child’s size portion of the roast which was a little too large for their little tummies but equally delicious.
