STAYCATION | 10 brilliant UK coastal campsites with great family-friendly facilities

By Rebecca Miles | 5th February 2020

Post-lockdown and when restrictions have been lifted enough for us to travel again, a remote campsite sounds just the thing. And there’s something to be said for the simple things in life – family, friends, sleeping under canvas, and a beach on your doorstep.

So once it’s declared safe to do so, pack your kit and the kids into the car and book into one of these, our round-up of the best coastal campsites for families in the UK.

It goes without saying that the campsites included here all have great facilities – at the least, toilets, showers and washing up facilities. Anything above and beyond that we’ve flagged up.

Check out these coastal campsites. The best coastal campsites – recommended by our very own Blog Squad.

Dorset: Osmington Mills Corner Campsite, Weymouth

Pitches are £15 per tent per night

Familes return year after year to Osmington Mills, unable to resist its soothing Dorset charms. Four miles from Weymouth and a mile’s walk from the Jurassic Coast, endless easy beach days are a given. With plenty of space for kids to run around, the 80 pitches are spread among relaxing rolling fields and trees. Family wins include the means to freeze ice packs and charge gadgets, a bakery on site, craft tent, farm animals and haybail hire. There’s pubs and restaurants are within walking distance.

Osmington Mills Corner Campsite is the recommended beach camping site among many other coastal campsites around the UK.

Yorkshire: Humble Bee Farm, Scarborough

Pitches from £27 per night for two adults

Humble Bee Farm isn’t strictly coastal – but at just 10 miles from the sea at Scarborough we had to include it simply for the fact it’s keen camper and Girl About North Yorkshire Helen’s favourite place to pitch up. It comes highly recommended by her for its busy calendar: “No event goes unmarked at Humble Bee.

There are nature events, lambing events in spring, stargazing, and little campers can even help Farmer Percy with his morning rounds, not forgetting to collect the freshly laid eggs for breakfast! We loved the fact it was small and peaceful. The site is clean and well-maintained and a great base for exploring Scarborough, Whitby and Filey.”

Sussex: Hare & Hounds Campsite, Rye

Pitches £22 per night for two adults, children 3-16 £2, children 0-2 free

A gem of a small campsite just outside Rye, the two fields in the grounds of this former pub are heaven for kids. There’s a goal post in the middle of one for social kickabouts and a wild flower meadow full of butterflies and bugs in the other. Ten minutes drive from the epic sand dunes at Camber, it’s also in the heart of 1066 country with local castles aplenty. It has some of the loveliest facilities we’ve ever come across, including gadget charging and ice pack freezing, plus there’s a cute shop on site too.

Cornwall: Gwithian Farm, Hayle/St Ives

Pitches from £16 per night for one car and two adults, children 3-17 £2.00, children 0-2 free

Set back from the dunes on the beautiful Gwithian Sands – a huge stretch of beach that spans all the way to Hayle – the campsite is a short stroll from a lovely village pub and the Sunset Surf Café. Older kids will love the beach’s amazing surf, and for nature lovers there’s a resident seal colony easily viewed from cliff-top walks.

During the summer months, various street food vans visit on different nights of the week and a huge plus for families with really little ones is the baby bath area. NB It’s fully booked until 25th August – either visit right at the end of the holidays or bookmark it for next year.

North Norfolk: Deepdale Backpackers and Camping, Burnham Deepdale

Pitches from £17 per night

The North Norfolk coast is one very long playground for beach-loving kids, and this campsite halfway between Hunstanton and Wells-next-the-Sea is a great spot for exploring the whole area. Some of the finest washing facilities this side of the home (individual wet rooms with a loo, shower and sink) won our hearts, the fact it’s just a 15-minute walk from the excellent Crab Hut at Brancaster Staithe means we’ll be back again and again.

Northumberland: Springhill Farm, Seahouses

https://www.springhill-farm.co.uk/caravan-site

Pitches from £16 per night, for one car and two people, £2 per extra person (under 1s free)

Two details of Springhill Farm make it a hit with families – fire pits are allowed, so what better than toasting marshmallows over the flames, and there’s a children’s play area with goal posts. But what sets it apart is its location – about a 20-minute walk to the swathe of beach that runs between Seahouses and Bamburgh. Seahouses is brilliant for rock pooling; Bamburgh is home to the huge (and possibly haunted) 11th century Bamburgh Castle.

Conwy, Wales: Trwyn Yr Wylfa

Pitches from £16 for one car and two adults, children 3-16 £2.50

With sea views in one direction and Snowdonia in the other, this Welsh campsite is a hit with families – there’s a huge playing field for kids to roam free in and the beach at Penmaenmawr is a 20-minute walk away, with its outdoor paddling pool and playground. Walking distance to both the villages of Dwygyfylchi and Penmaenmawr, there are shops, pubs and takeaways on hand, as well as family washrooms, microwaves and freezers at the campsite.

For the seriously adventurous, it’s just 20 minutes drive from Europe’s longest zip wire, Zip World at Penrhyn Quarry. This is one of the best coastal campsites in North Wales.

Inverness-shire: Camusdarach, Arisaig, Scottish Highlands

RECOMMENDATION | Billy Bob’s Parlour & Diner – The Yorkshire Dales 145

http://www.camusdarach.co.uk

Pitches from £22 for a small tent and two adults a night, children aged 3-15 £3

An idyllic spot in the Highlands tucked behind the sand dunes of the Atlantic coast and a short ferry hop from the Small Isles, Camusdarach is a dreamy spot for kids to run wild in. Wildlife abounds – seals, otters, dolphins and porpoises all call the bay home; venture out in a boat and you might see whales and sharks. Campsite facilities are excellent and include baby-washing facilities and eco-friendly grey-water detoxification.

Londonderry, Northern Ireland: Maddybenny Farm Campsite, Portrush

TRAVEL 10 brilliant UK Coastal Campsites with great family friendly facilities 08

http://www.maddybenny.com

Pitches from £7.50 per person, children under 10 £5, infants under 2 free

With views over the bay of Portrush, Maddybenny’s is a livery yard with self-catering cottages as well as a campsite. Not far from the Giant’s Causeway, this stretch of Northern Irish coast is great for swimming and surfing, while inquisitive souls will love exploring the caves at Whiterocks Beach in Portrush. On-site, there’s a games room and play area.

Devon: Beryls, Kingsbridge

TRAVEL 10 brilliant UK Coastal Campsites with great family friendly facilities 09

https://www.berylscampsite.co.uk

Pitches from £8.50 per person, children 4-15 £4, 0-3 £1

Devon’s South Hams have always been a favourite spot of mine since I was little – the sheltered beaches tucked into coves are rock-pooling heaven, and the pebbly beach at Blackpool Sands is the perfect skimming stone territory. Beryl’s Campsite is ideally located for exploring all of this beautiful coast and is a wooded haven with 29 spread out pitches and views towards Start Bay. Fire pits are allowed and the closest beach is Beesands, a 10-minute walk away.
