TOP 10: The Best Cosy Country Pubs in Cheshire

Taking a seat in a cosy country pub during the winter months is one of life’s true pleasures. A crackling fire, a glass of red, and some home-cooked ‘pub grub’ is such a comforting pursuit that we have all, until very recently, taken for granted. Nipping to our ‘local’ Cheshire country pub for a pint, a light bite or hearty dinner was something we did without thinking twice; a place to congregate at the end of the working day and the heart of the community.

We celebrate good times and bad in these establishments; Weddings, Christenings, Wakes, Birthdays, Graduations and Engagements…nothing is off limit and throughout all these incredible and difficult times, our friendly local Cheshire pub continues to open its doors and welcome us in. So it seems only right, whilst they are so heavily impacted by the effects of the pandemic, that we do all we can to shine a light on some of the best country pubs in Cheshire. From the small village locals, fine-dining gastro pubs, boutique coaching inns, and everything in between.

Here is my list of the Top 10 very best cosy country pubs in Cheshire; read on and see if yours is included below:

Top 10: The Best Cosy Country Pubs in Cheshire

1. Fishpool Inn, Delamere

Located close to Delamere Forest, making it the ideal stopping point after a walk, the Fishpool Inn is a beautiful 18th-century coaching inn that has been lovingly restored by the family-owned, Cheshire based Nelson Hotel Group. Having won multi awards, this cosy gastropub is one of the most popular in Cheshire and it is easy to see why. Exposed timber beams, a stunning conservatory, inglenook fireplaces, and in-keeping décor complement the exceptional menu catering to all tastes including a Children’s Menu, woodfired pizza, their famous Knickerbocker Glory deserts, and hearty Sunday Roasts. Dogs are welcome in the pub area with water and doggie treats as well as a large garden perfect during the warmer months. The pub is family-friendly and large groups are welcome (during normal times); it is the perfect place for a celebration and my go-to favourite pub.

2. The Pheasant Inn, Tattenhall

Located in Burwardsley close to Tattenhall, the AA Rosette Pheasant Inn is nestled in the Peckforton Hills and enjoys spectacular panoramic views over the Cheshire Plain to North Wales. This five-star gastro pub, again owned by the Nelson Group, also features 12 boutique bedrooms and provides the ideal spot to spend a weekend. Whether you are stopping for a quick drink, a delicious home-cooked meal, or an overnight stay, you will be guaranteed a warm welcome. The area boasts countless walking trails along to Sandstone Trail and the Pheasant Inn is a welcoming stopping point along the route. Dogs are welcome in the pub and the outdoor elevated seating area is the main selling point during the Summer months. In the Winter, enjoy a table close to one of the open fires and relax within this award-winning establishment.

3. The Dog at Peover, Over Peover

Located in the picturesque village of Over Peover, 5 miles South of Knutsford and close to Jodrell Bank, sits The Dog at Peover. Since taking over the pub in 2013, the current owners have lovingly restored the original features including opening the fireplaces, to create a welcoming and comfortable pub. Alongside a traditional bar and homecooked menu, The Dog also houses six beautiful en-suite bedrooms that make for a relaxing stay and the perfect position in which to explore Tatton Park, Alderley Edge, and the Cheshire Countryside. There are also plenty of local walks surrounding the pub and The Dog serves as a great meeting point to enjoy a well-deserved pint afterward. Part of the Cheshire Pub Company, their sister pubs include The Ship at Styal, within walking distance of the National Trust’s Quarry Bank Mill, The Frozen Mop in Mobberley, and the newly opened The Churchill Tree at Alderley Park.

4. The Boot Inn, Willington

Located in the village of Willington, close to Kelsall, The Boot Inn is set in picturesque countryside with views over the fruit fields and hillsides of ‘Little Switzerland’ in Boothsdale. A traditional English pub, owned by Mike for 21 years, it welcomes you in with its roaring open fires and cosy corners. Serving home-cooked food using local produce, The Boot Inn is a friendly pub and the heart of its community. There is an array of countryside walks available from the pub including the Sandstone Trail, with several walking groups using The Boot as a base.

5. The Parr Arms, Grappenhall

Located in the pretty village of Grappenhall, close to Lymm and Warrington, The Parr Arms has had a contemporary makeover whilst still retaining many of the traditional pub’s features including the open fires and cobbled front seating area in the shadows of St. Wilfrid’s Church. Serving traditional homecooked food, cask ales, and daily specials, The Parr Arms is an ideal spot to visit after a walk along the Bridgewater Canal or to and from Grappenhall Heys. Owned by the Cheshire-based Broad Oak Pub Company that works with local brewers Robinsons and JW Lees, their sister pubs worth noting include The Alvanley Arms near Cotebrook which features six en-suite bedrooms, and the Red Lion at Pickmere.

6.  The Patridge, Stretton

Located in Stretton, conveniently close to the M56 but nestled away on the fridges of the Cheshire countryside, The Partridge re-opened its doors in 2017 after an extensive renovation to the original 17th-century building that was previously The Hollow Tree. Owned by Flock Inns, part of the North West Timpson family business, The Patridge houses 10 stunning en-suite bedrooms making it the ideal spot to explore North Cheshire or as a stopping-off point whilst travelling to North Wales/Manchester. The friendly team, headed up by Adam, will provide a warm welcome and the extensive menu starting with Breakfast through to Evening meals (and everything in between) will cater to and please the whole family.

7. The Egerton Arms, Chelford

Located in Chelford, close to Macclesfield, The Egerton Arms Pub and Chop House is a traditional countryside pub that has been revived thanks to its progressive young owners, Jeremy and Anne. Also incorporating an onsite Deli selling local meats, produce, and products; The Egerton Arms serves the local community as well as attracting guests from further afield. The traditional features of the pub remain and have been sympathetically restored including the low beams, open fireplaces, and interesting antiques. The traditional British classics on offer are all home-made and produced using the finest local ingredients. Children are made to feel very welcome with a great menu and an outside playground.

8. Three Greyhounds, Allostock

Located in the small village of Allostock, close to Shakerley Mere, The Three Greyhounds is an impressive award-winning pub owned by The Cheshire Cat Pubs & Bars Group. The Group prides itself on supporting Cheshire based producers and suppliers with the Three Greyhounds particularly focusing on celebrating local micro-breweries from within a 35-mile radius of the pub itself. The Three Greyhounds was also voted as one of the Sunday Telegraph’s top UK ‘ Dog-Friendly Pubs’ thanks to the help yourselves drinking bowls, a Dog Menu featuring a Dog Craft Beer, and free doggie nibbles. For the humans, the traditional hearty British menu will warm you up after a countryside walk and during the Summer months, the pretty beer garden is a lovely spot to soak up the sunshine. The sister pubs within the group are equally as impressive and worth a visit, these include: The Cholmondeley Arms, The Bulls Head, and Roebuck Inn which features a ‘Pub Hub’ shop selling local Cheshire produce.

9. Swettenham Arms, Swettenham

Located in Swettenham Village close to Congleton, The Swettenham Arms is an independent classic English pub with a huge sprinkling of elegance. Famous for its stunning Lavender and Sunflower meadow during the Summer months as well as its proximity to the Quinta Lovell Arboretum, this pub is a day out in itself. Visitors flock to The Swettenham Arms to sample their traditional homecooked menu using regional produce, fine wines, and beers from local micro-breweries. The Swettenham Arms welcomes you in with its friendly service and cosy interiors; during normal times, the pub also plays host to weddings and events including classic car rallies. The local area is ideal for walking and dogs are made welcome in the pub and outdoor areas. Children will enjoy the vast open gardens and spotting Jodrell Bank as you make the drive through the countryside.

10. The Fox and Hounds, Sproston

Located in the village of Sproston, just to the West of Holmes Chapel, The Fox and Hounds is a hugely popular and welcoming countryside pub. With bright interiors complimenting the traditional features including open fireplaces and exposed brickwork; this pub feels cosy yet contemporary in equal measures. The classic British menu is served with flair and finesse, with all tastes catered for. The real selling point of this pub, however, is the huge outdoor beer garden including an impressive children’s play area which would make the ideal spot to base yourself on a warm day.

Enjoy!
