The Ultimate Bake Off Experience – The Big London Bakes

By Emma – part of Girl About London – 8 October 2020

What I loved about: It’s the perfect fun filled bake-off experience.

Worth traveling across London?: Absolutely! You will not regret it.

Expect: Be prepared to unleash your competitive side and immerse yourself in the real-life Bake Off experience.

Value for money: 8 out of 10

Perfect For: Date night, team building, or a laugh with friends and family!

Setting the scene:
Just imagine stepping off the busy streets of Tooting into the Bake Off tent. The tent is set up, just as you would imagine the Bake Off tent to be, with multiple workstations, fridge’s along the edge, and everything you need to create your perfect bake!

As you enter the tent, you are greeted by one of the Baking Assistants and shown to your work station. The experience is carried out in pairs and the workstations are set up for you and your baking partner. Each station is equipped with all the equipment, ingredients (pre-measured), and your baking instructions. All you need is yourselves and your creative baking skills!

Once you’re kitted up in your apron, you will be introduced to the Head Baker. They’ll explain the experience and what you will be baking. Each month they change what you will be baking – it changes seasonally. We were tasked with baking ‘mischievous monsters.’ These little guys are made of sponge cakes, personalised with your flavour choice, and topped with buttercream. Once your briefing is complete, it’s time to get hands-on and creative…READY, STEADY, BAKE!

The baking time itself is around 1 hour 15 minutes! The Head Baker sets a timer and will give you prompts throughout the baking time, to make sure you are on the right track. They are also available, along with the baking assistance to offer any guidance you may need.
Each bake can be personalised to your taste and flavour preference. You are encouraged to be as creative as you want. For October, they are offering Autumnal flavours for your sponge including carrot, pumpkin, and chestnut. They also have the creative corner, where you can visit throughout your time baking. It offers various spices, flavourings, dried fruits, and nuts that you can add to your bake. My mischievous monster had carrot, almond, cinnamon, and nutmeg thrown in for the sponge mix.

As you work through your recipe and whilst you create your bake, there is music playing in the background making it a fun evening. There may have been a bit of dancing whilst I whisked up my cake batter!
Each bake will challenge you to learn a new skill, for example, I learned how to make a basic cake batter, mix a meringue buttercream, and even had a go at piping!

Throughout the baking time, the Baking Assistants comes round and will help take away your washing up and clear down your work surface. What a bonus that you get to bake without the washing up part!
Now for the decoration, you are encouraged to be as creative as you want. They offer you various colours to use for your icing. You can also visit the creative corner, where you will find fondant icing, 100’s, and 1000’s and other items to decorate your monster. As you can see, we opted for an orange fella with pink horns and a big old tongue hanging out.

When the timer goes off – it’s time for judging! Everyone presents their bake to the Head Baker and everyone gathers around to see if their bake has made the top 3. The cakes are judged based on presentation, technique, and taste. The top 3 bakes are chosen and the winner wins a prize! Just to mention that my monster came third – not to blow my own trumpet or anything!
After the judging, you box up your creation and you take it home to enjoy. There is ample opportunity to take pictures throughout the experience and they even have a few great selfie spots set up in the tent!

It is the ultimate immersive experience and something I highly recommend getting booked on. They have thought of everything to make it as close to what you would imagine the bake-off experience. I went with a friend. We had such fun creating our mischievous monster and devouring him after! It comes highly recommended from me!
