Beautiful food, beautiful setting


Worth paying a babysitter?

Sure is.


Really good food, good vibes, attention to detail.

The Stratford

Setting the scene:

Thursday night a couple of weeks ago and my Dad was in town. My step-mum had gone to an ABBA event at the O2 and he didn’t really fancy getting all dressed up like a Super Trooper, so we decided to go out for a bite to eat. I’d been to The Stratford once before when it first opened in the summer and was impressed with their Stratford burger, so thought it was worth having another look.

The Brasserie is located on the ground floor, below the 145 room hotel, rental apartments, mezzanine bar and another restaurant – The Alegra (next on my list for sure!).

As you go through the revolving doors you’re greeted with a beautiful open space adorned with a Paul Cocksedge installation, a gorgeous bar to the left and to the right, The Brasserie; overlooked by an open kitchen. If you can, I’d recommend sitting facing the kitchen, then you can watch the chefs at work — which is exactly what I did.

Service overall was good, apart from towards the end of the night when it seemed to lapse a little. Water was brought over straight away and poured, which I liked. Drinks orders were taken and then onto the food. Oh the food. Where do I begin?


The Menu:

The menu itself is fairly substantial, combined of snacks and starters, salads, pasta, mains and grills. And if you can fit in any dessert – there’s plenty to choose from too.

We went for crispy cod cheeks and sweetcorn and truffle soup to start with. I’m going to have to go back just to take a video of how the soup was served — an Instagrammers dream! A goats cheese choux bun placed in the bottom of the bowl and then the soup poured over the top at my table. Looked great, tasted better.

For main course we went for Poached Salmon Nicoise which Dad said was really good, especially because it was relatively light on salad leaves. I went for 35 day dry-aged sirloin. You can’t go wrong with steak; but actually more often than not, you can. Thankfully it was cooked to perfection (medium for me) and tasted so good. A side is included with the cost of the steak, so I went for the tomato and onion salad, and then paid extra for bernaise sauce. YUM.

The menu caters for meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans alike, which was really good to see. I didn’t manage to squeeze in a dessert, but the ‘Baked Alaska to share’ caught my eye, which I will definitely have next time.

If you love food and don’t know Sheffield very well then the Kelham Island Food Tour could be the one for you. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon, filled with many tasty delights whilst discovering new places around the much loved industrial part of town. The first time I ventured away from my city-centre haunts was shortly after finishing uni, when we discovered the Fat Cat pub and (more importantly) £2 pints of ale. It dumbfounded us that we’d never even heard of this part of town, so finding such an amazing place to drink after four years living in Sheffield was quite a late discovery!
