The Best (and Most Original) October Half Term Activities in Cheshire

The October Half Term holidays will be a bit different for most this year. Many who would normally travel abroad may find themselves at home trying to think of new and exciting ideas for how to entertain the children. Rather than sticking to the well known day trips, why not try something different and check out my ideas for the best and most original family-friendly activities in Cheshire.

Wet Welly Walk

Rather than sitting inside waiting for good weather, dig out those wellies, and find a super muddy walk to enjoy with your little ones. Here are some great ideas:

The Gruffalo Trail at Delamere Forest

The Dingle, Appleton

Riverside Loop, Nantwich

Anderton Nature Park, Northwich

Spud Wood, Lymm

Moore Nature Reserve

Hire a Canal Boat

This is certainly an exciting and quite different way to spend the day (or few days)! Hiring a canal boat gives you the opportunity to navigate spectacular scenery in Cheshire. The Thorn Marina in Stockton Heath currently has a fantastic offer for single households during the month of October (subject to availability). For £120 you can hire a narrowboat for the day from 9 am to 4 pm which will allow plenty of time to sail down to Lymm/Altrincham and back again.

Other canal boat day and holiday hire companies:

Anderson Boats, The Boatyard

Cheshire Cat Narrowboats, Overwater Marina

Heritage Narrowboats, Heritage Marina

Explore a new National Trust property

Do you always stick to the same National Trust property?! If like me you do, why not step outside your comfort zone, and visit a new National Trust property this Half Term. Here is a list of some alternatives in Cheshire and slightly further afield (do not forget to book your tickets in advance):

Speke Hall, Liverpool

Biddulph Grange Garden, Staffordshire

Alderley Edge Countryside, Cheshire

Erdigg, Wrexham

Quarry Bank Mill, Wilmslow

Visit the Animals

There are plenty of opportunities to get up close and personal with some animals in Cheshire. The obvious choice is Chester Zoo which of course is a fantastic day out but why not consider some less known alternatives this Half Term:

Lakemore Farm Park

Walton Gardens Children’s Zoo

Cotebrook Shire Horse Centre

Cheshire Falconry

Knowsley Safari Park

Try a different Park/Playground

We are spoilt for choice when it comes to amazing playgrounds and parks in Cheshire. Why not visit a new one this Half Term:

Grosvenor Park, Chester

Walton Gardens

Castle Park, Frodsham

Victoria Park, Widnes

Blacon Adventure Playground, Chester

The Moor, Knutsford

Tatton Park Adventure Playground

Halloween Activities

With Halloween just around the corner, why not try out these spooky activities this Half Term:

Pumpkin Picking – check my Top 5 Cheshire Pumpkin Patches here

Pottery Painting at Jenny Wrens, Stockton Heath

Pirate Pumpkin Trail at Blakemere Village

Spooky Playground at Castaway Play

I love to see your adventures so make sure to tag me at @girlabout.cheshire on Instagram and use the hashtag #makingmemoriesincheshire

Enjoy!

REVIEW:

This is a Girl About review. I was invited by the management to dine at their restaurant free of charge in exchange for an honest and frank review. All my opinions are my own and in no way have they been swayed by their kind invite. Girl About reviews are always 100% honest. We only publish reviews that, for the most part, are positive.
