THE BEST: Farm Shops in Cheshire

By Jenny Schippers – 31st December 2020

A Guide to Shopping Locally and Supporting Cheshire Growers, Suppliers and Producers

From Field to Fork…

Thanks in part to the semi-rural nature of Cheshire, we are truly blessed with a huge number and variety of incredible farm shops, delis, and purveyors stocking locally grown produce and homemade goods across the county. From field to fork, we can follow the journey of these high-quality ingredients from the farms of Cheshire to our dinner plates at home. Whether that be freshly laid eggs from Higher Oak Farm in Lymm, velvety smooth custard from Clotton Hall Dairy near Tarporley, or liquid gold honey from Haughton Honey near Nantwich, the list is truly endless.

The Benefits of Shopping at your Local Farm Shop…

The benefits are also two-fold when shopping at a farm shop for produce; not only are you sourcing the finest food of the highest quality, but you are also supporting Cheshire farmers and protecting jobs within the local community. As much of this produce is grown slowly and not mass-produced, the cost compared to a supermarket is often higher, however, there is absolutely no expectation that your local farm shop should become your sole supplier. These fantastic local conveniences are a place to visit to collect the odd item, source specific ingredients for a special occasion, or maybe shop for a gift.

Essential Shops Serving Local Communities…

Other key points to note, farm shops/delis are ‘essential’ shops and can continue to stay open to serve the public during the pandemic. Many have also diversified over time to include cafes and restaurants serving up the produce grown on the farm. Currently, due to restrictions, these cafes/restaurants are offering takeaway services and are a fantastic place to stop at en route to a local walk or when you are simply looking to avoid the busier supermarkets. I have included a list below of my favourite Cheshire farm shops, delis, and purveyors of locally grown, sourced or supplied produce. These have been listed by area to avoid having to drive too far and always check ahead for opening times before visiting:

North Cheshire

Kenyon Hall Farm Shop

Winwick Lane, Croft, Warrington, WA3 7ED

This incredibly popular farm shop, plant centre and café really does tick all the boxes. With a huge calendar of events throughout the year, including fruit and pumpkin picking, as well as a lovely play area, Kenyon Hall Farm is a great place to visit for local produce. Organic meat is sourced from Mrs Forster in St. Helens, Happy hens’ eggs from Croft, and homemade jams, cakes, and bread made on the premises. Much of the fruit and vegetables are grown at the farm or brought in from a local supplier in Rixton. Kenyon Hall Farm is also a huge supporter of fellow Cheshire suppliers and stocks a wide-range of artisan products made in the region.

The Hollies Farm Shop, Lower Stretton

Walnut Tree Farm, Northwich Road, Lower Stretton, Warrington, WA4 4PG

The second, smaller site at Lower Stretton opened in 2007 and shares the same ethos and values as the main Hollies Farm shop located at Little Budworth.  Working with over 70 local suppliers to stock the shelves with incredible market fresh fruit, vegetables, meats, and dairy alongside beers, wines, and spirits. The Hollies are also well known for their deli selection of homemade pies, pre-prepared meals, and delicious cakes.

East Cheshire

Little Heath Farm Shop

Cow Lane, Dunham Massey, Altrincham, WA14 4SE

Little Heath Farm Shop located in Dunham Massey is the exclusive stockist of the Dunham Massey Venison reared at the neighbouring National Trust property of the same name. Also available to purchase from the farm shop are the fresh, organic free-range eggs and seasonal vegetables from the nearby Red House Farm and milk from Pool Farm in Lymm.

Higher Oak Farm

Higher Lane, Lymm, WA13 0RG

This small, family-run natural farm is set on 16 acres and primarily specialises in farming traditional and rare breed poultry from sale across the UK. The farm sells their freshly laid eggs as well as using them to produce incredible homemade brownies that are for sale, along with their eggs and honey at the self-serve shepherd’s hut on the property. This ingenious and thoroughly modern farm shop ensures a contactless system to pick up essentials.

Cheshire Smokehouse

Vost Farm, Morley Green, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5NU

Cheshire Smokehouse has been smoking and curing food for over a century passing down the techniques from generation to generation. This family-run business has expanded and diversified over the years to now offer a farm shop, wine and spirit department, expert butchery, artisan bakery, and onsite café. Many products for sale in the Smokehouse shop are prepared and made on the premises. There is also a wide selection of homewares and products supplied by fellow Cheshire businesses for sale in the shop.

Cheshire Quality

King Street, Knutsford, WA16 6DW

Working in partnership with Cheshire based suppliers, producers, and artisan crafters, Cheshire Quality provides a unique concept in showcasing regional produce to a wider audience from its store on Knutsford High Street. Not only does it stock foodstuffs but it also houses handcrafted homewares, crafts, and jewellery making it a truly one-stop-shop for Cheshire products. Cheshire Quality also offers bespoke hampers containing all these incredible items making for a special gift for a loved one or as a corporate order.

The Lambing Shed

Chelford Road, Knutsford, WA16 8RB

The Lambing Shed at Moseley Farm has been in the same family, The Mitchells, for 65 years and includes a shop, butchery, deli, and café. All the beef and lamb sold from the butchery is straight from the farm and the pork and chicken comes from local farms in the area. Within the deli, the homemade award-winning pies, pies, and home-cooked cold meats are produced onsite. The farm shop itself stocks products by over 45 local suppliers including Burt’s Cheese and Cheshire Honey from only a couple of miles away. The café is a pure delight with its contemporary interior making for an ideal pitstop to enjoy a hearty breakfast or lunch. There is also a small playground outside for little ones to enjoy.

South Cheshire

Glebe Farm Shop

Peel Lane, Astbury, CW12 4RQ

A perfect example of a farm using its initiative to diversify over the years to create a unique local shopping and visitor experience. Glebe Farm near Astbury contains not only a farm shop, butchery, and fishmonger but also a collection of independently owned small businesses, a covered animal barn, an outdoor play area, and a family-friendly coffee shop. These free to access facilities complement the fantastic farm shop and should not be missed.

Lowe’s Farm Shop

Moss Lane, Byley, Middlewich, CW10 9NG

The Lowe family have resided at Shanty Farm for over 60 years and continue to offer the finest selection of fresh produce, plants, and groceries from their farm shop. On the site, there is a number of small independent businesses operating including Ginger & Pickles tearoom that opened this year as well as Cheshire Wardrobe Boutique and Frame Cheshire.

Cheerbrook Farm Shop

Newcastle Road, Nantwich, CW5 7EL

Cheerbrook opened its doors in 2000 and for the past 20 years has been serving the residents of South Cheshire with its exceptional local produce. The beef sold in the butchery and deli as well as being used in the pre-prepared meals and café is supplied by the Bourne family farm based at the foot of Bickerton Hill. The pork is sourced just over the county border in Staffordshire and chicken from Shropshire. There is also a range of handmade pastries, a show-stopping cheese counter, and an array of homemade cakes, containing free-range eggs and Mrs Darlington’s preserves, available to purchase. The onsite café continues this ethos using fresh, locally sourced ingredients for its menu including Chatwin’s bread and Tilley Green coffee.

West Cheshire (and Wirral)

Claremont Farm

Old Clatterbridge Road, Bebington, Wirral, CH63 4JB

Located on the Wirral, this all singing all dancing farm shop is incredibly impressive. With not only a fully stocked farm shop including butchery and deli; the beautiful café and event space offers visitors that little bit more. With, in normal times, a full calendar of music and family-friendly events through the year, Claremont farm is always one to keep an eye on. It is also close to Port Sunlight, and the stunning beaches and parks of the Wirral, so a great place to stop whilst passing.

In the shadows of Delamere Forest sits Coronation Farm, a traditional farm shop selling home-grown seasonal produce and freshly laid eggs. The farm shop also stocks an array of Cheshire cheeses and dairy products.

The farm also houses a café and florist located within the greenhouse.

Hollies Farm Shop, Little Budworth

Forest Road, Little Budworth, CW6 9ES

The original site of the Hollies Farm Shop; this vast site includes an impressive farm shop, butchery, homeware barn, café, and luxury forest lodges. As with the Lower Stretton site, the team works with over 70 local suppliers to stock the shelves with the finest products. Being conveniently close to Delamere Forest, The Little Budworth site has now become the perfect place to shop, eat and sleep. A real staycation option to consider for foodies in Cheshire.
