Shop Small, Support Local This Christmas

This year I find myself being drawn to shop local more and more. I think it’s partly to do with the unusual year we have had and seeing the devastating effect it has had on local businesses and also the local communities we have here in the Lake District and beyond are really special and this year has definitely shown that. In this list I have aimed to pull together as many local businesses I could find so that we can all shop local this Christmas, even when the high street is closed.

Food & Drink

Organic and Plastic free shop situated in Cockermouth where you bring your own containers to stock up on pantry essentials. They also stock self care and household items that are all plastic free so if you’re looking to help reduce your plastic waste or wanting to get a thoughtful gift for someone that’s also eco-conscious then you can pop along to Cokermouth Wednesday-Saturday.

For the adventures wherever your adventures take you. Their nutrition guides can help you through training, races or competitions to help keep you energised whatever you’re doing. If you’re not sure where to begin you can purchase a ‘Starter Pack.’ These are all developed right here in the Lake District. Made in the mountains, for the mountains.

Based in Threlkeld, just outside Keswick in the North Lakes, Carvetii are specialty coffee roasters that roast small batches of coffee to bring out the best in each flavour. They supply a lot of the local cafes around the national park so I’m sure if you’ve ever had some you’ll know how fantastic it is. You can set up subscriptions so your coffee can be delivered to your door right when you need it.

Supplying some of the best artisan cheeses around. Cartmel Cheeses supply some of the best restaurants in the north west. They like to keep things simple, ageing the cheese on site and making sure they have a cheese expert on hand if you aren’t sure what cheese would be perfect for you.

At the other end of the Lake District is another, fantastic cheese deli (I love cheese okay?!?) They specialise in cumbrian cheese sourcing from all around the county including Wigton and Appleby. The range of cheeses are so creative and unique. Special cheese displays and cheese wedding cakes are their speciality!

Their intent is to make whisky that expresses the Lakes through their flavour. Their holistic approach to whiskey making is breathtaking. They have also created a range of gin and vodka if they are more to your taste. For Christmas you can order bottles of your favourite, tasters of something new, or experiences and tours for the full experience.

Beer made using the water that falls straight off the local fells and inspired by their beer garden, the Lake District. For every beer lover there’s everything from crates of your favourite, merchandise and tours available. There really is nothing better than a cold beer after a long walk (or anytime really) and you can order these to your own home.

Homeware

A fantastic business that is built around the premise of ‘giving back to the landscape.’ These beautifully designed badges, stickers, t-shirts, key rings, totebags and more are all inspired by the mountains and lakes we love that help you make the memory of the Lake District last longer. They also give 5% of all profits back to their charitable partners who are all part of protecting and maintaining our national parks.

Designed and made in the UK you can find calendars, gifts and artisan cards all inspired by nature and scenery in The Lake District. The gifts are a lovely way to introduce the outside into your home whether that be through a calendar or a lovely mug for that morning brew.

Near Penrith, Clare hand makes beautiful pottery, specialising in outdoor pots and ceramics. She is passionate about taking what comes from the ground and making something with it that people can enjoy and love. She is stocked in small retailers in the local area but will also take custom orders through her website. For the green fingered friends of yours, this could be the perfect gift.

Adventure inspired accessories, fashion and decor based in Cumbria. The founder, Rachel, says that all her designs are taken from the inspiration she gets from the forests and mountains of the Lake District. Lots of her designs can be personalised to whoever you want and lots of what she maes are limited edition. The little adventurers aren’t forgotten either!

Alicja takes inspiration from the man-made structures around the wild and remote landscapes of the Lake District and Pennines to create her beautiful stoneware and porcelain. She harvests her wild clay in Cumbria and makes truly unique pieces to buy on her online shop.

Established in Grasmere in 1887 in the same building it’s always been in the shop or online you could lose yourself for hours perusing the books from local poets to curious non-fiction and children’s books. Still selling online over lockdown, you can find the best books to inspire you, your cousin, your niece and your nan for whatever adventures are inside these books.

Inspired by the delightful characters of the Lake Districts Herdwick sheep, ‘Herdy’ was born in 2007. Their aim is not to just create cute and unique gifts but to also give back to the rural and farming communities of the Lake District. You can purchase by purchasing through them you are supporting things like the training of dry stone wallers and the fairtrade price for Herdwick wool.

A small business that supplies beautiful Macramé for the modern bohemian home. For anybody who is a fan of bohemian decor, (me please) handy holders of all those plants you’re trying not to kill and she has even just released her beautiful christmas range. If you prefer being in the water, want to improve your wild swimming knowledge or would like to book so you can have a go at wild swimming in some of the best and most dramatic scenery in the Lake District the you can book a day out with Suzanna. You can di your toe in a tarn, lake or river with her. If you can’t get here then you still support her as this year she wrote a book focussing on swimming in the larger lakes. It even includes where to grab a cake afterwards!

After starting up in 2017 with a small herd of Alpacas, Alpacaly ever After now has a herd of over 100 alpacas and llamas that you can meet and greet, take on a walk, or trek up a mountain! It sounds ridiculous but I think a lot of the time, the best things are. They also design and make ethical and sustainable products that promote alpacas and their yarn. It’s such a fun and creative way to spend time in The Lake District.
