Baccalà London

Why I love it: Simple, fresh, and clean flavours

Is it worth getting an Uber for? For sure!

Expect: Beautiful seafood and wine

Value for money: 7/10

Perfect for: A casual date or night or just catching up with friends

It’s as if I was transported back to Cinque Terre in Italy last summer, but then I had to remind myself I was actually in London on Bermondsey street. Baccalà offers genuine Italian seafood dishes using local, seasonal, and fresh produce from the sea and the garden in a contemporary setting elevating traditional flavours.

The menu changes seasonally which I love as each experience is different. This time, I tried their summer menu where they serve antipasti, pasta course, mains, and something sweet to end the night. There is also a catch of the day option depending on what’s available on that day.

My friend and I decided to share the course with the Roasted octopus glazed with sapa, melon, vesuvian tomato, and caper leaves and Seabass carpaccio with black olive powder, Ligurian courgette, and marjoram for appetisers. We then had the Spaghetti ‘Senatore Cappelli’ with sweet Tropea onion, clams, and wild fennel, and finally, Black rice coated fried baby squid.

Everything was delicious – the seafood was fresh, and the flavours were so simple and clean that in my opinion, paid respect to such beautiful produce. The WINNER for us would have to be the appetisers! The combination of flavours for both just worked so well. The octopus was cooked to perfection and that glaze on it was out of this world! The seabass carpaccio with the courgette had contrasting textures making the plate pop!

My only comment for the whole meal was that if you were ordering the baby squid, have it to share as a table rather than have it on its own as main as it doesn’t come with any sides. That being said, it was crispy and I found the black rice coating very different from anything I’ve tried. The spaghetti was perfectly cooked and the sauce that came with it was delicious!

The service was great and the restaurant had such a great atmosphere! In terms of price, it ranges from £11- £25. They have extended the Eat Out to Help Out scheme on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for as long as they can which helped us. However, for the quality of the food and the wine and a lovely evening, I did think it was worth it!

I can’t wait to try their autumn menu and see what flavours and produce they’ll bring to the table!
