RECOMMENDATION | Rudy’s Neapolitan Pizza – Manchester

Why I love Rudy’s Pizza?
The pizza is genuinely amazing but the venue is also really cool with great staff.


Worth paying a babysitter?
If you’re after a casual lunch or dinner without the kids then yeah, however this branch of Rudy’s is situated near lots of great bars so it could be incorporated into a night out as well. You’d have to share a pizza though if you want space for drinks after! It’s also a good place to take the kids during the day.


NOT a 1950’s American diner, which is what we all expected when we went! The name “Rudy” conjured up images of a diner with red bar stools, neon lights, black and white tiles and a jukebox for some reason. It was the total opposite!


Value for money: (out of 10)
10 out of 10. I paid £8.90 for my pizza (which was a special, so the regular pizzas cost less) which is cheaper than many fast food chain places but with much better quality and more authenticity.


Setting the scene:
I headed into town with my hubby Kov and our toddler Archie to meet my sis-in-law for lunch. After realising we needed pizza we did a little research on the best pizzeria in town, and chose the highly recommended Rudy’s Neopolitan Pizzeria. The original Rudy’s is based in Ancoats, but we needed to stay in the city centre so stuck with the Peter Street branch.

We were really surprised when we got to the entrance as the front wall was made up of big glass windows and a large, simple yet retro style logo printed on one of the glass panes.

There was a basic but pleasant outdoor seating area which was busy as the sun was, oddly, shining over Manchester. We stepped inside and were surprised again – the restaurant was much larger than we expected and had a spacious and industrial feel to it. Exposed brick walls, pipes and wires across the high ceiling, white wall tiles and plain concrete flooring gave it a cool factory/warehouse vibe, but the displays of potted green plants and the wooden tables and chairs made the place feel homely.

There was a huge mosaic-tiled pizza oven set right behind the bar where the pizzas are prepared and cooked. The large windows all around the venue made it bright and airy. The atmosphere was relaxed with customers of all ages. Good music was playing, and not too loudly which can be a turn-off for us in restaurants. There’s just nothing good about yelling to each other over rave music with food in your gob.

The service was brilliant – our waitress was really friendly, attentive yet easy-going and knowledgeable. We were seated at a large table near the back, not far from the high chairs and the stairs leading up the toilets. Good spot when you have a potty training toddler! We could see the specials board from our table and had a menu each. Choosing was HARD, and not just because we’re all greedy. There was just the right amount of choice but they were all good choices.

There wasn’t a kids menu but we liked that – we didn’t need one as we just ordered Archie a margherita pizza. We all chose different pizzas so we could try a bit of each; I ordered a very tasty sounding special which went like this: “San Marzano tomatoes topped with gorgonzola, fior di latte, Tuscan sausage, cherry tomatoes and pecorino”, and I added an extra topping of wild boar salami. Because I’m greedy.

All of our pizzas arrived within minutes as the pizzas only take about sixty seconds to cook in that big fancy pizza oven I mentioned. SIXTY SECONDS. Amazing!

They proudly mention on their website, “Just like in Naples, our dough is made on site every day, (and) takes 24 hours to double ferment”… and you can tell because the pizza base was superb.

So were the toppings which were thoughtfully chosen to complement each other. The pizza was cooked to perfection – no grease – and the amounts of each topping were well balanced. My pizza was an easy 10 out of 10 for flavour – I’d choose it again it was that delicious. Kov had the orange and fennel salad to start which isn’t normally my cup of tea, but it was actually really nice and went well with pizza.

The pizza size (there is only one size available) was just right for me and the other grown-ups and we just doggy-bagged the rest of Archie’s pizza. We were absolutely stuffed!


The Menu:
There was a great choice of starters and sharers that include various salads, olives and sharing boards of cured meats or vegetarian nibbles. The mains are the pizzas, ranging from a basic marinara to rare-to-find white pizzas, with lots of interesting ones in between full of delicious toppings you may have to Google (well, we had to Google them).

There was a specials board with a couple of other pizza options that change daily, as well as a board dedicated to negroni cocktail specials which all sounded fantastic. Which brings me to the drinks menu – expect lots of Italian cocktails, wines, beers, coffees and even soft drinks! We were very impressed with this. The prices for the drinks are what you’d expect in the city centre, apart from the cocktails which are actually cheaper than elsewhere at £5.90 each!

Rudy’s is a great all rounder. It’s perfect if you’re looking for a lunch time treat that’s fast, trendy and affordable, but also perfect for a date night in an attractive venue with sophisticated pizza and good wine. It’s a new family favourite of ours now!
