REVIEW | The Ivy, Leeds

By Emma Banks | 07th December 2018

Tuesday is apparently the most depressing day of the week. The previous weekend feels like it never happened and the upcoming one seems like a lifetime away. Well I love Tuesdays – especially when you get invited to dine at the newest kid on the Victoria Quarter block, The Ivy, Leeds.

From the moment you walk through the doors of this up and coming Leeds hot spot you know you’re somewhere special. Bright, bold and eclectic decor around every corner; beautifully polished parquet flooring and cosy banquette seating. It’s sophisticated and classy without being pretentious and was right up our street.

We arrived at 6:30pm and even at that time on a weekday the place was bustling with couples and friends meeting up after a spot of Christmas shopping in the city centre. I normally spend my Tuesday evenings up to my eyeballs in maths books followed by a cross country scramble with Lyla across a muddy football pitch to Rainbows, so it only seemed right to toast my evening off with a glass of champers – it is almost Christmas after all!

My friend Liv and I had been starving ourselves all day in preparation, so when the waiter asked if we were ready to order we could barely contain our excitement! “Would you like some bread and nibbles to start with” erm is the pope catholic? We weren’t expecting an entire rustic bloomer to be brought out to us but we certainly weren’t complaining – who doesn’t love proper bread and proper butter!?

Whenever I eat out my eyes are immediately drawn to the dessert menu and I choose the rest of my meal according to how much room I’ll need to fit in a decent pud! Everything sounded incredible so it was down to the trusty old “ip dip doo” to help us make our final decisions. For starters, I went for oak smoked salmon which was served with rye bread and was delicious and Liv decided on roasted scallops and was oohing and ahhing throughout.

If steak is on the menu then you can guarantee that’s what I’ll be having and this cut was cooked to perfection (medium rare) and served with thick cut chips and peppercorn sauce. Heaven. Liv opted for the grilled sea bass fillet with creamed spinach and thoroughly enjoyed that too.

The wine was in full flow as was the conversation (how good is it to be able to chat without being interrupted or jumped on by small children?) and I’d almost forgotten about my favourite part of eating out. Dessert.

After nosying at the various sweet delights being brought out to other diners we knew exactly what we’d be having. The chocolate bombe. More precisely, a melting chocolate bombe with a vanilla ice cream and honeycomb centre and hot salted caramel sauce poured on top. An instagrammers dream. I can honestly say this was the best pudding that I have ever tasted – and I’ve tasted a lot!

The combinations of hot and cold, sweet and salted were absolutely mouth-watering and in the last week or so since we visited I’ve probably thought about it at least once a day. Not even joking.

It really felt like a treat to be wined and dined at The Ivy, Leeds and it’s the perfect place to come celebrate with friends – whether that’s a special birthday, promotion or just because you can. If this is how the other half live then sign me up!

Thanks to The Ivy, Leeds for inviting us to enjoy a three course meal from the À La Carte menu.

Ours starters were £9.95 for the salmon and £11.95 for the scallops. The steak and sides came to £36 and the sea bass was £22.95. The chocolate bombes were £8.50 and I can’t recommend them enough. If you own a set of taste buds then you’ll love it!
