The Garden Cottage, Dummer – a Hampshire getaway

By Sarah Frost – 25th June 2021
hampshire getaway

Ideal for: events at Dummer golf club, couples, walking and cycling fans, people looking for a quiet escape, a golfing break

What I loved about the Garden Cottage: The proximity to the M3 for travel links, whilst remaining quiet and peaceful. The comfortable bed and great night’s sleep!

Expect: great views, a friendly welcome and a tranquil escape

A Hampshire getaway

Just a few minutes from the M3; The Garden Cottage is a lovely place for a Hampshire getaway. It sleeps two, making it ideal for a couple’s break, for those wanting to explore the Hampshire countryside. I was invited to stay by Camilla, and here is my honest review – all words and photos are my own.

Location

The Garden Cottage is just a few minutes from the M3, although I heard no motorway noise from the property at all. It makes it easily accessible by car, and also makes it ideal for visiting nearby towns and cities such as Winchester, Basingstoke, Stockbridge and Southampton. There is free parking at the gated property so you will feel safe and secure.

The property itself is just off a country lane, meaning there are plenty of walking and cycling routes from the doorstep. It also has views over Dummer golf course, making it the perfect spot to stay on a golfing break or for any events there such as weddings.

The village of Dummer has a pub which you can walk to, and if you want to make your own food then there’s a large supermarket 5 minutes drive away.

Accommodation and facilities

This is an Air BnB that sleeps two adults upstairs in the cottage, in a very comfortable king-size bed. Camilla has spent years living in Africa and Asia and has brought back many mementoes and photographs which add a lot of interest to the decor.

There are the all-important facilities for a short break, such as Wi-Fi, a smart TV and a good coffee machine. I love the personal touches though, like homemade brownies and then you can arrange use of the tennis court to burn them off afterwards.

The kitchen area has everything you need to prepare your own meals although we walked to the Queen Inn for dinner instead. There’s also a private seating area outside overlooking the orchard where you can enjoy an evening drink or two.

Another local dinner recommendation would be The Purefoy Arms, for the most delicious ribs in Hampshire

Things to do nearby

By choosing the Garden Cottage for your Hampshire getaway, you’re staying within easy distance of many local attractions. One of my favourites is the Bombay Sapphire Distillery, just a couple of miles down the road. To find out more about what you can experience here then read my blog here.

National Trust members will be pleased to see some local places such as The Vyne which is just a few miles away north of Basingstoke. There’s also Winchester City Mill, a working watermill where you can purchase flour milled on site. For more details on National Trust in Hampshire see my blog post here.

There are plenty of towns and villages nearby which are worth a visit. Along the path of the River Test there is Whitchurch, which has a Silk Mill and some lovely walks. There’s also Stockbridge; a small town with some gorgeous boutique shops and great restaurants such as The Greyhound.

You’re also not far from the historical city of Winchester, and I’ve shared some of the highlights here.

And finally….

The Garden Cottage is a lovely property, and I had such a comfortable night away there. Perhaps so comfortable that my waters broke that morning! That’s a story for another day though…

Camilla is a friendly, welcoming host who is there if you need her but will leave you in blissful privacy. Definitely one I’m adding to the list of great places for a Hampshire getaway!

Thank you so much for hosting us Camilla!

REVIEW:

This is a Girl About review. I was invited by the host to stay at their accommodation free of charge in exchange for an honest and frank review. All my opinions are my own and in no way have they been swayed by their kind invite. Girl About reviews are always 100% honest. We only publish reviews that, for the most part, are positive.
