REVIEW | The Deep – family fun at one of the UK’s largest aquariums

By Molly Scott | 22nd August 2019

Why we loved it at The Deep
We had such high expectations of The Deep. So many people have given us glowing reviews, I did wonder if the reality would disappoint.

We had intended to visit during our last family holiday where we had stayed in a cottage near Hornsea. Frustratingly, all getting ill put paid to any hope of doing anything… so when The Deep recently invited the Girl About Blog Squad to visit, I practically bit their hand off!

In my head, Hull felt a long way from Derbyshire but it was surprisingly quick and easy to get to. We visited on a rainy Sunday morning and our journey from Chesterfield took just over an hour and twenty minutes.

What an amazing attraction! There’s something magical about seeing under the sea. We saw sharks, turtles, penguins and thousands of fish – in every conceivable colour of the rainbow. My two year old daughter continually squealed with delight. All three of us really enjoyed it. The glowing reviews were spot on – The Deep is somewhere special.

The Deep is one of the most family friendly attractions I’ve visited. Your kids will LOVE it! It’s been thoughtfully designed to be fully accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs, there’s plentiful baby changing facilities, lots of high chairs in the café etc.

What to expect:
A fun, educational, multisensory experience.

Value for money: 9/10
Adult tickets are £14 each (but 10% discount if bought online). Under threes are free, older children are £11 on the door. All-day parking cost just £3 (just be aware it’s a cash-only pay and display). Although our visit was kindly gifted, we would definitely visit again and would happily pay these prices. It was an amazing day out – fun, entertaining and educational. It’s also worth noting that The Deep prioritises conservation over profit. Visitors enable them to carry out vital research and conservation work, both in-house, around the UK and right across the world.

Setting the scene:
The Deep is one of the most spectacular aquariums in the world and is home to over 5,000 animals, including magnificent sharks and rays. Amongst many other threatened species, it is the only aquarium in the UK where you can view the iconic and critically endangered Green sawfish. We especially loved seeing the turtles and colony of Gentoo penguins.

It is located overlooking the Humber Estuary is only a few minutes’ walk from the Museums Quarter, as well as the beautiful Hull Marina home to numerous bars and restaurants. The dramatic building, which overlooks the Humber estuary, was designed by world class architects and has played an important role in the regeneration of Hull. Inside is well organised and fully accessible. I was particularly impressed with the design of the viewing panels.

Most of them were clear glass right to the floor, facilitating a great view for even the littlest of visitors. Seeing the animals is exciting enough but there were also lots of interactive educational displays – lots of buttons to press and fiddle with!

There are various options for food and drink. Castaways Café has views over the Humber and serves hot breakfasts, a range of hot meals and salads, plus snacks, cakes, sandwiches and hot and cold drinks. Children’s meals and special dietary requirements are all catered for. There’s also seating if you’d prefer to take your own picnic, which is what we chose to do.

Two Rivers evening the only restaurant offers an enticing, locally sourced, sustainable menu. Approx £30pp for 3 courses. All three of us thoroughly enjoyed our visit. We would definitely return.

This is a Girl About review. I was invited by the management to experience the attraction in exchange for an honest and frank review. All my opinions are my own and in no way have they been swayed by their kind invite. Girl About reviews are always 100% honest. We only publish reviews that, for the most part, are positive.
