REVIEW | Teddy Bears Picnic at Elements Coffee House in Derby

By Molly Scott | 30th November 2019

Why I loved Elements Tea & Coffee House:
Go for the exceptional barista coffee and impressive tea menu, delectable home-made cakes or brunch/lunch. The decor has a stylish, hipster vibe but there’s also a very warm Derbyshire welcome. Elements succeeds in being genuinely inclusive.

Take the kids, especially if they’re young enough to enjoy a teddy bear’s picnic.

Light and airy decor with comfortable leather seating.

Value for money: 10/10

Setting the scene:
I had already heard good things about Elements. Despite only just celebrating their first birthday, they’ve been nominated for two awards in Marketing Derby’s food and drink awards (Best Newcomer and Best Customer Service). Thanks to their beautifully curated Instagram feed they were firmly on my Girl About radar.

So when Elements got in touch to invite us to try their teddy bear’s picnic themed children’s menu I jumped at the opportunity.

I can’t tell you the last time I enjoyed a delicious lunch out with my toddler. We have loads of fun but I’d pretty much resigned myself that civilised lunches at nice places were largely a thing of the past. I was intrigued to see whether this was the answer.

In the week or so before, Lily was bubbling with excitement. I remained somewhat sceptical. We were going through a particularly fussy stage where unless food was beige and over processed she wasn’t eating it. I love my daughter dearly but she’s not the most relaxed, civilised company to eat out with at the moment.

We were instantly put at ease by the friendly welcome at Elements. Lily dived straight into the toy box which kept her entertained long enough for me order.

The teddy bear’s picnic consists of a choice of sandwich (served in a teddy bear shape), teddy shaped crisps, vegetable crudités and slices of apple. Imaginatively served on a mini picnic table complete with gingham tablecloth napkin. Lily loved it! And selfishly, it kept her occupied enough that I could actually savour my own lunch and coffee. A parenting win if ever there was one!

I opted for a heritage tomato, ricotta, pine nut and basil open sandwich which was served with a huge fresh salad. It was simple but delicious. I’m already itching to go back and explore more of the menu. There were the usual brunch classics and light lunches including their signature dish of Scandinavian waffles.

I’d clocked the cakes quite early on in my visit and we bought two to takeaway to share with my family. A dense, almost bitter (in a good way!) chocolate and raspberry with a fudge like icing, and a rose loaf cake. Both were delicious.

I was particularly impressed with Elements’ ethical credentials. They aim to be truly inclusive. As well as being family friendly, the ramped entrance and spacious layout of tables would be easily accessed by wheel chair users. There was a spacious downstairs disabled toilet with baby changing facilities – all spotlessly clean. They also regularly host a mental health café on the first Tuesday of every month – a drop in discussion session (search Derby a Mental Health Café on Facebook for more info).

Elements are engaged in long term fundraising for the Padley Centre, a local charity that supports the most deprived and vulnerable people. It’s good to see a business so invested in giving back to the local community.

The overriding impression I was left with is that is a truly welcoming and friendly environment – but also ticked all the boxes I would expect from an upmarket coffee shop.

The Menu:
Extensive coffee and tea menus and a good selection of homemade cakes. Brunch and light lunches.
