Restaurants with Outdoor Seating in The Lake District

There’s absolutely no denying that food tastes better when it’s eaten outside, when you can be surrounded by beautiful scenery, bask in the sunshine and enjoy everything about the British cuisine and scenery we have right on our doorstep. What better place to do that in the stunning scenery of The Lake District National Park. You can enjoy all of these from these restaurants with outdoor seating in The Lake District.

The Swinside Inn, Newlands Valley

The Swinside Inn is nestled in the Newlands Valley in the north Lake District, just 10 minutes from Keswick. The Newlands Valley is one of the quieter and more remote parts of the Lake District. When sitting outside the Swinside Inn, as far as the eyes can see, there are only luscious green fields, trickling becks and spectacular mountains, including the Wainwright Fells, Causey Pike and Barrow.

This is the perfect post-walk pit stop and there’s plenty of choice of delicious, filling, homey food to refuel you for the next day’s adventures. You can go with the whole family and even your dogs will be welcome in the pub come restaurant with outdoor seating in The Lake District.

Chesters By The River, Ambleside

Right in the heart of the Lakes, near the Langdale Valley, you’ll find Chesters By The River, the cafe, takeaway bakery and boutique shop which won Cumbria Life Cafe of The Year in 2019. This is my go-to place for celebrating the goodness of plants with hearty vegetarian meals followed by a mouth-watering sweet treat.

If you sit outside then you’re right next to the River Brathay and can enjoy your delicious lunch next with the sounds of a babbling brook, surrounded by some of the most spectacular mountains that the Lakes has to offer. The outdoor area has recently been covered too so you, your family and your dog can enjoy Chesters By The River during a British summer!

Check out Chester’s Instagram too, for more information on this fantastic bistro/ restaurant with outdoor seating in The Lake District.

The Mortal Man, Troutbeck

For a fantastic mid-walk drink and food with amazing views over a quiet valley, The Mortal Man is a beautiful pub-come-restaurant with outdoor seating in The Lake District. The pub garden looks down the valley and is a lovely, tranquil, escape from the busy towns in The Lake District.

This pub is a regular stop for me when I walk from Ambleside over Wansfell into Troutbeck and back. This is a great walk for people to do as they’re just getting into hillwalking, as you can really take your time and even stop for a pub lunch halfway around, but also great for experienced walkers looking for a great day out.

Alternatively, you can head down the valley itself as a nice and gentle way to spend a day. The beer garden looks over the west and south so you’ll get plenty of sunshine and gorgeous views to enjoy with your pint and food.

Can you imagine anything better for pubs or restaurants with outdoor seating in The Lake District?

The Lingholm Kitchen, Portinscale

A few miles from Keswick, in the shadow of Catbells, you arrive at the Lingholm Estate. In the estate, you can walk to the lakeside, explore the gardens and even stay overnight in their luxurious boathouse or main hall. However, if you’re just popping by then make sure you have a taste of some of the amazing fresh food. You can grab a brunch or some lunch to takeaway if you’re heading out for a walk.

They have some lovely benches outside, room for the whole family and they are dog-friendly too! In the summer they open up all the doors of the building so the whole feeling is that of eating Al Fresco. You can look over the grounds and admire the setting that Beatrix Potter herself used as inspiration for some of her most famous tales, you might even see an alpaca walk past!

More incredible cafe’s, pubs and restaurants with outdoor seating in The Lake District coming right up.

Fresher’s Cafe, Ambleside

Very friendly and welcoming cafe in the heart of Ambleside with delicious cakes and homemade food. They have plenty of outdoor seating with umbrellas to shade you from the sun or shelter from the summer showers.

Every time I have been, I’ve been welcomed with a friendly smile and super service. You can sit outside and watch the world go by whilst enjoying some delicious food and sweet treats. Take a walk around Ambleside afterwards and soak up all the history, shopping and excitement of the town, right in the heart of The Lake District.

The Cottage in the Woods, Whinlatter Pass

Up High in the forest of Whinlatter you will find a beautifully charming black and white cottage with a Michelin Star food by Ben Wilkinson. The menu is all inspired by local food from the surrounding hills, the nearest coastline and a whole host of wild foods from around Cumbria.

The tranquil woodland setting really sets the tone for eating here and you will truly be immersed in the cosy, yet airy, atmosphere. The veranda looks out on views down to Bassenthwaite Lake, over the forest. Once the candles are lit and you are sampling some of the finest food in Cumbria, you won’t have any other cares in the world.

The Cottage in The Woods is one of the best restaurants with outdoor seating in The Lake District.

The Pheasant Inn, Keswick

Keswick is home to many, many, pubs however, being a busy town, it is a rare opportunity to find one with a garden as well. The pub has spent a lot of 2020 renovating their outdoor space ‘Taffy’s Terrace,’ named after their four-legged landlord so that you can sit outside and enjoy their food in all weathers.

Being right in the centre of Keswick as well, you can get to it easily and there’s plenty of options to stay nearby. The food itself is a great combination of cosy, comfort food and locally sourced dishes that celebrate all that Cumbria has to offer. It has a great atmosphere with open fires inside and the multi-level terrace means you will have your own area to enjoy your meal.

Great for families, groups and four-legged friends, whatever the weather.

Tweedies Bar, Grasmere

You wouldn’t expect there to be a lot of outdoor space in a small village like Grasmere. The old and slightly wonky buildings are very quaintly packed in, which gives the village a lot of its charm. Hidden in plain sight, right in the centre of Grasmere is Tweedies Bar and Lodge with lots of outdoor space for everyone to enjoy.

The bar has an extensive range of craft beers, ales and perries, as well as wines and spirits to please everyone. You can pick up something hearty and seasonal for lunch, or just a delicious snack after a good day out adventuring. Every single time I have been, I’ve been blown away by how delicious the food is whilst still catering for all food preferences and needs as well as families.

Their outdoor space is mostly uncovered however, usually, there are big umbrellas on the benches to shade from the sun or rain. Tweedies holds the Grasmere Guzzler Festival on the first weekend of September every year and uses their expansive grounds for that – an event not to miss if you’re a beer and music lover.

Bring your furry four-legged friend too as there is plenty of room for them to relax next to your bench. Another great restaurant with outdoor seating in The Lake District.

I really cannot think of any better way to enjoy your food than outside, under the sun. We are always hoping for a warm summer and with this selection of cafe’s, pubs and restaurants with outdoor seating in The Lake District, you can enjoy an amazing summer of food and drink in Cumbria.

The only question is, which cafe, pub or restaurant with outdoor seating in The Lake District are you going to try first?

Happy exploring and eating!
