RECOMMENDATION | Wainhouse Tower, Halifax

By Emma Banks | 20 May 2019

If you live in Halifax you’ve probably driven past Wainhouse Tower and not realised that for a few quid you can pay a visit and climb its spiral staircase.

It’s “just” 403 steps to the viewing gallery (great leg workout) and there you can take in the stunning sights over Halifax and beyond. It’s said that the tower, though originally built in Victorian times as a chimney, was instead used by its owner as a way of spying on his neighbours. Takes neighbourhood watch to a whole new level!

Lyla, Matt and I made it to the top in about 10 minutes and once you’re up there you can spend as long as you want looking out in the distance trying to spot well-known landmarks. Wainhouse Tower is only open to the public 4 times a year so it’s a good idea to plan ahead so you don’t miss them.

Also, it’s worth noting that you don’t need to book in advance but it’s cash payment only so make sure you’ve got some on you!

Wainhouse Tower is open between 11-4 (last ascent 3:30pm) on the following dates:
Easter Monday April 22nd
May Day Monday May 6th
Spring Bank Monday May 27th
August Bank Monday August 26th
