RECOMMENDATION: The Hyndland Fox – one of my favourite places for lunch in Glasgow’s West End

A great little place for lunch in Glasgow

This one’s been on the list for me for a while as every time I drive past, I’d longingly look on at brunchers and lunchers sitting outside in the little curb-side suntrap in the heart of Glasgow’s West End.

Hyndland is a plush area with a very local feel. Just a stone’s throw from the real hustle and bustle of the West End, this is local West End living area. It’s actually our dream location to live and we tried furiously to purchase here before we made the decision to move to the ‘burbs – but prices here have skyrocketed, and it’s due to how simply gorgeous it is and all of the amenities you’ll find on your doorstep, combined with being a really safe and clean area perfect to settle down in.

If you live in Hyndland, you don’t really need to leave the area to find anything else you might need. With fine dining, cosy cafes, boutique shops and stylish bars all there, what else could you need?

The West End is renowned as being one of the trendiest and wealthiest areas of Glasgow, so it’s no surprise to see a mish mash of fashion styles, designers and quirky looks. It’s this that I really love about the area as anything goes and choosing something wacky to wear is both liberating and comfy here.

The Hydland Fox is a beautiful eatery donned with flowers and potted plants circling the outside that you can buy. I love the idea of picking up a takeaway cactus or lavender bush after tucking into your eggs benedict on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Serving local ingredients on a Scottish menu with international twists, it’s an excellent choice for brunch or lunch.

I scheduled a lunch date with my bestie last Sunday and we quickly settled on trying out the Hyndland Fox, as neither of us had eaten there yet. Why the heck we hadn’t, I don’t know, as wherever there’s good wine, good grub and a dreamy West End vibe, we’re normally there with bells on.

One of my favourite past times has to be brunching. All the eggs and all the carbs paired with all the coffee. However, on Sunday my heart was saying BREAD but my body was saying VEGETABLES so I quickly scanned the menu to see what healthy options were on offer that would still have me excited to visit, but not have my stomach screaming at me right after. I settled on the Coriander and Siracha Chicken Skewers and as I gave my order our lovely server smiled knowingly at me. I asked her if that was a good choice and she quickly said: “Oh aye”. Well, that’s definitely good enough for me and sounds like I’m off to a good start. Accompanied by a super food salad, I took the mini win that I knew my tummy would also thank me for the choice.

Suz, ‘the bestie’ previously referenced went full brunch (gaun yersel hen!) and ordered the Oak Aged Feta and Eggs on sourdough with added fresh Scottish smoked salmon. I won’t lie, I’m kinda drooling writing this… Sounds pretty heavenly, doesn’t it?! To top it all off, we both ordered a mimosa. I mean, I’d argue anyone under the table that this isn’t a recipe for the best Sunday mate date ever.

As we waited on our food to arrive, we sat outside, sun coming and going behind the clouds ensuring we weren’t sweating our tits off but also getting a little fuzzy glow every so often whilst sipping on our cocktails watching everyone on the bustling street go about their day.

The food arrived and we were not disappointed. My chicken skewers were absolutely delicious, so juicy and had the perfect amount of spice drizzled over the top to give the lime dressing a kick, whilst lying on a bed of edamame and giant cuscus and courgette salad. I felt super smug going for the healthy option, but by no means did I sacrifice on flavour! I could quite happily eat that every lunch forever and I don’t think I’d get sick of it. Such simple flavours thrown together and a beautiful colourful plate of food. Perfect. Suz’s egg dish was enormous and with a huge portion of smoked salmon on the side, it’s excellent value for money and the fact we barely spoke as we munched on our grub is a pretty decent sign!

By the time we finished eating it started to drizzle and, so kindly, they quickly reserved us a sofa inside to move in out of the rain and we ordered some wine. Inside, the décor is my idea of heaven. As much as I enjoy a cosy café on a cold day, I love the feeling of an open space, huge windows and tall ceilings. This is something you’ll find in a lot of West End eateries as many of the older buildings boast high ceilings and gorgeous cornice on the roof making them dreamy restaurants and bars. It’s these little quirks and touches that makes me fall a little more in love with Glasgow the longer I’m here.

Snuggled on the sofa and out of the rain, a few more wines (hick!), and some tipsy catch ups were had to top off a perfect visit to the Hyndland Fox. You’ll find it on Clarence Drive just a short walk from Hyndland train station which you can reach really simply with ScotRail from the city centre. Alternatively, it’s an easy, and lovely 15-minute walk from Hillhead Subway station on Byres Road and you can enjoy ogling at the red sandstone tenements and blonde townhouses along the way, dreaming of your future best West End life.

If you happen to be visiting during the week, they have an awesome brunch deal – any dish, a coffee and an orange juice of or only £10. Plus you can add on a mimosa for only £3… Why wouldn’t you?! Sunday through Wednesday they also have a fab fixed menu deal called ‘Fox After Four’ – 2 courses £16.95 or 3 courses £19.95. Decisions, decisions…

REVIEW | Teddy Bears Picnic at Elements Coffee House in Derby

I had already heard good things about Elements. Despite only just celebrating their first birthday, they’ve been nominated for two awards in Marketing Derby’s food and drink awards (Best Newcomer and Best Customer Service). Thanks to their beautifully curated Instagram feed they were firmly on my Girl About radar.

So when Elements got in touch to invite us to try their teddy bear’s picnic themed children’s menu I jumped at the opportunity. I can’t tell you the last time I enjoyed a delicious lunch out with my toddler. We have loads of fun but I’d pretty much resigned myself that civilised lunches at nice places were largely a thing of the past. I was intrigued to see whether this was the answer. In the week or so before, Lily was bubbling with excitement. I remained somewhat sceptical.

RECOMMENDATION | The Stratford Brasserie, Stratford – East London

Thursday night a couple of weeks ago and my Dad was in town. My step-mum had gone to an ABBA event at the O2 and he didn’t really fancy getting all dressed up like a Super Trooper, so we decided to go out for a bite to eat. I’d been to The Stratford once before when it first opened in the summer and was impressed with their Stratford burger, so thought it was worth having another look.
