RECOMMENDATION | F’Coffee, Derbyshire

By Molly Scott | 5th June 2019

The Matlock Bath branch of F’Coffee is now closed. However, the atmosphere and menu etc is nearly identical at the Ashbourne branch which remains open.

Why I love F’Coffee
Excellent coffee, amazingly tempting cakes and a good excuse for a wander round Matlock Bath.

Worth paying a babysitter?
No – take the kids. Just be aware there are some steps up to the entrance and no baby changing facilities.

A floral archway leading to shabby chic décor. Wooden floors and lots of fake foliage and street art punctuated by neon signs. Beautifully decadent (if diabetes inducing) freakshakes, a heaving cake counter and proper barista coffee.

Value for money:
8 out of 10

F’Coffee can be found at both Matlock Bath and Ashbourne. I’ve visited the Matlock branch of F’Coffee several times and it’s a firm family favourite.

Matlock Bath is essentially the Blackpool of Derbyshire, complete with illuminations every autumn. It’s fun – but in a naff, seaside resort kind of way. Being a bit of a snob at heart, I like Matlock Bath in a largely ironic way, but my toddler genuinely loves the place. She usually has to be dragged kicking and screaming from the arcades.

Up until recently the food options were pretty much limited to fish and chips or ice cream. As such, F’Coffee is a very welcome addition to Matlock Bath. Not least because it serves very decent coffee and cake, two of my favourite things in life.

F’Coffee are famous for their instaworthy freakshakes. As much as I love a bit of gluttony, I can’t quite face the inevitable stickiness involved. However, if this is your thing you will be in absolute heaven. For example, the Nutella consists of chocolate hazelnut flavoured milkshake topped with a sugar doughnut, whipped cream, chocolate sauce, salty pretzels, hazelnuts, chocolate chips and more Nutella!

I tend to order my regular skinny flat white – of which I consider myself quite the connoisseur – and they more than meet my stringent expectations. On this occasion, I had a salted caramel brownie which was every bit as good as I hoped. Dense, almost bitter brownie with sweet, salted, gooey caramel.

F’Coffee offers tempting breakfast and lunch menus. The brunch menu includes all my favourites: smashed avocado, bacon and Brie sandwich and thick fluffy pancakes with a choice of toppings. Lunch options include sandwiches, paninis, salads etc.

After your visit to F’Coffee you may well be in need of a gentle stroll – in which case head along the arcade lined highstreet or cross the bridge for a more scenic view of the river.

Child and dog-friendly. No bookings are taken (except for the breakfast tapas – see below) and expect it to be busy at peak times on a sunny weekend.

The Menu:
Full breakfast and lunch menus.

Breakfast tapas can be taken Monday to Friday, £15.95 per person, Matlock Bath venue only. Breakfast tapas consists of a mini pancake stack, mini bacon cob, mini granola pot, mini avo on toast or smoked salmon and scrambled egg, flute of OJ and a pot of tea or coffee. Booking essential (email info@fcoffeeuk.com).
