A weekend of wellbeing on many levels

Casa Turnilla Yoga Retreat, Spain – A weekend of wellbeing on many levels
A weekend at Casa Turnilla Yoga Retreat in the picture-perfect Spanish town of Estepona on the Costa A Del – just a hop, skip and a jump away from Marbs – is a fabulous little 2-night wellness break for anyone looking to get away from it all for a few days to practice some personal wellbeing.

Aside from the fact that this urban yoga retreat offers exceptional value for money, it ticks all the wellbeing boxes. I was kept active, I re-connected with one of my very good friends on a completely new sober level, I ventured beyond the bars and hiked a mountain, soaked up the Spanish sunshine, nourished myself with delicious, freshly cooked Vegan food and I learnt something new – that something was yoga.

Wellness for everyone – Mind and Body
As someone who hasn’t really ever practised yoga due to perceived preconceptions of an overload on incense sticks, overly-dramatic breathing techniques and a room full of tie-dye-clad ladies looking through their metaphorical third eye, my expectations were a little low. Oh, how foolishly presumptuous I can be.

Whether you’re a yoga novice or dexterous downward-dogging-yoga-posing pro, Casa Turnilla Yoga Retreat ticks every single box.

Owner and yoga teacher Adam and his Spanish wife Sonia are the perfect hosts, welcoming guests into their house-come-B&B. Adam runs the yoga and meditation retreats whilst his wife and Spanish señorita Sonya – a fully qualified Nutritionist – cooks up the most delicious Vegan grub for breakfast and late lunch on their 2 night /3-day retreats that run over a number of set weekends throughout the year. Their Yoga Holiday Dates are listed here: https://turnillayoga.com/yoga-escapes/

What to expect in a nutshell from Casa Turnilla Yoga Retreat?
A little oasis of calm in the middle of the busy coastal town of Estepona. Relaxed but challenging morning yoga sessions on the beach and afternoon sessions in the private yoga studio. Incredible vegan food, hiking excursions and new life-long yoga-loving friends.

Free evenings mean that guests who want to balance out all the yoga, meditation and clean eating at Casa Turnilla Yoga Retreat with a Sangria or six in one of many local bars and restaurants can do so.

This retreat is perfect for everyone, regardless of your yoga journey. Adam does a fantastic job as assessing everyone’s abilities from the word go and tailoring each class to ensure everyone benefits, giving each individual his personal attention.

His meditation classes are something else and will have you hanging on the edge of consciousness, not least because he was the silky voice that is enough to put anyone into a state of pure relaxation.

If this is your first weekend yoga retreat, expect to return home a yoga-loving convert.

Value for money: 10/10
At only 300 Euros for two people sharing a lovely room in their beautiful B&B for two nights including six yoga and meditation sessions, two delicious meals a day and a local excursion, Casa Turnilla Yoga Retreat is an absolute steel. Yes, you read that right – 150 Euros per person all in if you take your bessi and share a room.

The Details
Adam and his wife have done a very clever job of combining their family home-come B&B with Adam’s yoga practice mastery, and Sonya’s Vegan MasterChef-like abilities and nutritional knowledge to create a thriving little business that offers B&B accommodation, pay-as-you-go yoga classes and delicious, freshly prepared, home-cooked food.

And on set dates across the year they run weekend Yoga Retreats that bring all of this together is a very efficacious, and very reasonably priced way.

Turnilla B&B is housed in a three-story townhouse slap bang in the centre of Estepona, just three blocks from Estepona Beach. Big iron gates lead directly into the open plan family living room and kitchen and onto a ground-floor terrace where guests are made to feel super welcome from the word go.

‘My Casa, Your Casa’ is certainly the way this couple rock so expect to immediately become part of the family and don’t be surprised if you are handed one of their adorable and super-chilled young children and expected to bounce them around on your knee whilst Sonya whips you up a welcoming herbal tea.

The two night/three-day Yoga Retreat Weekend check-in is at 4pm on a Friday with the first Yoga class at 5pm on the dot. Adam wasted no time in taking half of the guests on our trip up to the 1st floor to check them into their lovely rooms.

Depending on the size of the group, don’t be surprised if you are whisked off to a local apartment – our group of 10 was too big to accommodate in their house which only sleeps 6 guests in three very lovely twin rooms with two shared bathrooms between them, so Adam took the liberty of hiring out a luxurious, local apartment a block away from the B&B complete with a large sea view balcony, fully equipped kitchen and en-suite facilities.

Either way, no one was disappointed with their digs. For the all-in cost of 150 Euros per person (approx. £125) in this great little two-night yoga retreat, either option goes above and beyond even the highest of expectations. And mine are high.

Yoga Time
Adam is the highlight of the weekend. Not least because he is seriously flexible and awfully good at yoga. But also, because he’s great at adapting his yoga classes to fit the group, whilst ensuring everyone is pushed to their limit. He takes no yoga prisoners, and will make time for each of his pupils individually – expect to be pushed out of your comfort zone – hell I was standing on my head by day three!

Depending on everyone’s preferences and the weather, Adam gives his group the option of practising yoga in his rather noisy (traffic noise – my only whinge about this place) air-conditioned studio which is located just across the block from the B&B, or alternatively the group can head to the beach.

The beach was definitely a good call for the morning Yin Yoga session which starts at 8.30am on the dot. Estepona beach was pretty empty, and the sound of the waves lapping against the sand whilst one is inhaling and exhaling and focusing on opening up their chakra in a downward dog pose is a pretty redeeming experience, especially for a yoga novice like yours truly.

I haven’t seen an 8am Spanish sunrise since Ibiza 2011 when I was making my way back to my apartment for the third night running after a 12-hour bender on Bora Bora Beach. So, there was something very transformative for an ex-party princess like me – hot-footing it out of my Spanish holiday apartment at 8am dressed in Lycra with a yoga mat under my arm and a spring in my step looking the rather smug part after eight hours of glorious sleep.

Morning yoga is followed by an incredible Vegan breakfast on Adam and Sonya’s amazing roof terrace with spectacular views of the mountains and the Mediterranean – on a clear day you can see as far as the Island of Gibraltar from the terrace.

Whilst Adam leads the morning Yoga class, Sonya preps breakfast. Expect to return to a sun-soaked terrace featuring a long communal table filled with homemade Vegan granola, nut milk soaked black rice, fresh fruit salad, freshly brewed coffee, oak milk with spices and a delicious array of homemade bread – my particular favourite was the sultana and curry bread which was absolutely delish.

Saturday afternoon’s activity is optional – Adam gave the group a few options to include a walking tour of Estepona Old Town, or a hike up a nearby mountain and a stop-off at some local natural sulphur bathing pools for a smelly dip and an au-naturel mud facemask. The majority of the group, including me, agreed that we wanted to hike the mountain – keeping me away from the Spanish bars for a few hours longer.

A couple of the guests wanted to take a little time out alone and opted for a lazy afternoon on the beach – no questions asked – that was an option too. As long as they were back at the B&B roof terrace in time for lunch at 3pm, it was all super relaxed.

Lunch was divine. What Sonya can’t do with an Aubergine isn’t worth doing. She demonstrated just how varied, flavoursome and nutritious a Vegan diet can be with dishes such as homemade beetroot, kale and Dahl Lasagne, delicious spicy dips, fruity curries, salads and bucket loads of Quinoa.

For me, the beauty of Adam and Sonya’s weekend yoga retreat – aside from the remarkable value for money – is its location.

For those who don’t want to fully immerse themselves in a weekend of green tea swigging, plant food nibbling, downward-dog posing and meditation, Turnilla Yoga Retreat’s urban location in the heart of Estepona allows for guests such as yours truly to end the day tucking into a Fillet Steak washed down with a litre of Rioja in one of the wonderful local restaurants right on Turnilla’s doorstep.

And if you want to jump in a taxi and hot-foot it into Marbs for a night on the tiles, then you can do that too. There’s nothing quite like Adam’s 90-minute morning Yoga class on the beach to banish a hangover and get you back on track.

After all, wellbeing is all about balance, right?
