8 of the best pubs with gardens in Hampshire

It feels like a long time since we’ve been able to visit a pub for a drink in the garden. You’ve probably walked miles over the latest period of lockdown and passed many a pub, wistfully looking into the garden. As the weather gets warmer, and we get closer to that April 12th date when places can reopen their outdoor dining (government confirmation pending), now is the time to start planning that first pub visit.

We are fortunate in Hampshire to have hundreds of country pubs. This may be a growing list, but I’ve started with 8 of the best pubs with gardens in Hampshire. If your favourite is not on this list, then do contact me on Instagram as I’d love to hear your recommendations.

The Ship Inn, Owslebury

I will start with one of my favourite pubs with gardens in Hampshire. This pub has been open since 1681 and is in a pretty village, close to Twyford and Marwell Zoo. There is a really nice circular walk which you can do from here as well which I’ve done before, and The Ship is the perfect place for refreshments when you are finished.

The garden is huge, with a terraced area, plenty of tables on the grass and a children’s play area. Many of the ingredients are grown in the kitchen garden, and the ones that aren’t, are sourced from local farms. I can thoroughly recommend the pie!

They reopen on April 15th and you can book here: https://theshipinnowslebury.pub/

The Northbrook Arms, East Stratton

I came across this pub on a charity walk in 2020, and immediately bookmarked the large pub garden for a future visit. It’s just 8 miles north of Winchester, and has been undergoing some serious renovation work in preparation for opening a brand-new self-catering accommodation and swimming pool in May 2021.

There are dozens of tables on the large green outside. The owners want to make the reopening as fantastic as possible, and so you won’t be able to book a table until May 19th but it will be worth the wait.

See more information here: https://www.northbrookarms.com/

Watership Down Inn, Whitchurch

This pub overlooks the River Test and also has rooms you can stay in. It’s very close to the distillery of Bombay Sapphire, making it the perfect place to stop for a bite to eat after a distillery tour. You can read more about gin tours by reading my blog here.

The Watership Down will reopen on April 15th, with a new marquee providing a covered seating area. There’s a new seasonal menu launching for the reopening, and you can find out more and see how to book a table here: https://www.watershipdowninn.com/

The Pheasant Inn, Highclere

Situated in North Hampshire, near the Berkshire border is the Pheasant Inn. It’s just around the corner from Highclere Castle, better known as Downton Abbey. It’s a 17th Century inn, with accommodation, and was taken over by Billy and Ryan in 2019.

I visited for a Sunday roast and it was by far the nicest pub roast I’ve had. This is also the place I’ve booked for my brothers 30th birthday in April, because it has a new covered and heating outdoor dining area.

They reopen on April 15th and you can book a table here: https://www.thepheasanthighclere.co.uk/main-menu

The Mayfly, Stockbridge

The Mayfly is one of the best pubs with gardens in Hampshire because the beer garden runs adjacent to the River Test. The pub is dog friendly, and there are lots of walks nearby. The head chef uses lots of local produce, including from Laverstoke Park farm. This pub garden is an idyllic spot on a sunny day, where you can sit and watch the swans and ducks swim along the river and enjoy a refreshing drink.

They reopen on April 12th and you can book a table here: https://www.mayflyfullerton.co.uk

The Greyhound, Stockbridge

Another place on the River Test is the Greyhound. More of a hotel and restaurant than a pub, it deserves a place on the list because of the gorgeous views from the large garden. If you get the timing right, the sun sets just over the river, so enjoy the view whilst you sip a G&T from the Garden Bar.

They have retained their Michelin Guide Plate for 2021 for good reason, with delicious menus and great service. They have some exciting plans for their reopening, which is April 12th and you can find out how to book here: http://thegreyhoundonthetest.co.uk/

The Old Forge, Otterbourne

Close to Winchester, The Old Forge has a lovely alfresco terrace; perfect for outdoor dining. They have an extensive drink and wine menu, and plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. There are lots of tables on the terrace, with umbrellas to keep you protected come rain or shine.

They reopen on May 17th and you can book here: https://www.theoldforgeotterbourne.co.uk/

Bartons Mill, Old Basing

Bartons Mill is one of my favourite pubs with gardens in Hampshire because I can walk to it! The beer garden has always been popular, particularly with dog walkers and is usually bustling on warmer days. There’s a decent food menu and a good choice of drinks.

In 2020 they covered the outdoor dining area and it has heating as well, making it a great place to visit for evening drinks as well as daytime. It reopens on April 15th and is already fully booked for the first couple of weekends so you’ll need to be quick; book here: https://www.bartonsmillpubanddining.co.uk/

Hopefully, you’ve discovered a new pub to add to your list, once we are able to revisit them. I’m happy to recommend walks that incorporate these pubs as well, just drop me a message on Instagram.

Enjoy!
