Make the most of the warm weather and find the perfect place to relax, unwind and tuck in to your favourite picnic snacks. Pack up your favourite al fresco treats and enjoy a sunny day in the great outdoors this summer.

In York we are absolutely spoilt for choice for stunning backdrops and great views where you can sit down and eat. You can’t visit the city without calling at one of the local parks.

Here are a few of my favourite places to enjoy a picnic in York.

Homestead Park

Clifton York, YO30 6WP

Located in Clifton and only a 30 minute walk from the city centre Homestead Park is beautifully maintained by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. With entrances to the park from Water End and Shipton Road, it is open all year round and perfect for a picnic. Known for it’s famous seasonal floral display it provides a beautiful backdrop for your meal. There’s a children’s play area to explore and make sure you visit the pop-up café which serves snacks and hot and cold drinks, just in case if you’ve forgotten something!

York Museum Gardens

Museum Street, York YO1 7FR

Next to the River Ouse and in a prime position in the city centre, York Museum Gardens is definitely one of York’s most beautiful parks. Only a short walk from the Minster and close to York Railway Station, you can spend as much time as you like enjoying the river views. The medieval ruins of St Mary’s abbey are a great place to explore and there’s lots for the kids to see.

There are plenty of benches and areas for you to sit back and enjoy your picnic, it is well worth a visit. With stunning scenery in a picturesque location, York Museum Gardens really is the beating heart of the city.

Rowntree Park

Terry Avenue, York YO23 1JQ

Rowntree Park is only a short walk from the city centre, located on Terry Avenue by the River Ouse.

A beautiful 30 acre park, Rowntree Park is open every day. With an adjacent car park, you can certainly make a day of it! Rugs at the ready for a prime day out to make the most of the summer sun.

With playgrounds, tennis courts, basketball courts, a skate park and a childrens play area to keep you busy it’s also the perfect spot to relax and explore the grounds.

Perfect for families, Rowntree Park also has a cafe which serves food daily, using fresh and locally sourced produce. If you’re walking into the city after your picnic, the walk will take you along the river with beautiful views of the stunning scenery.
