Best outdoor spots to enjoy the sun in East London

By Lindsey Roberts – 28 July 2020
RECOMMENDATION | Billy Bob’s Parlour & Diner – The Yorkshire Dales 88

It’s going to be HOT later this week in London, rising to 30 degrees on Friday and then raining by Monday, so I wanted to share some of my favourite places to be outdoors in the East so you can make the most of it! Read on for park recommendations and some of my favourite places to enjoy the sun with food and drinks in my hand! Both are very important…

Outdoor food and drinks:

Barge East – 15 mins walk from Stratford station, 5 mins walk from Hackey Wick station
Book for restaurant, outdoor space on a first-come, first-served basis.

There’s lots of outdoor space on the bankside next to the Barge, a newly opened garden area with seating where the team is growing their own veggies and outdoor space on the Barge itself to enjoy a more formal meal. Great food and super friendly team. Check them out on Instagram.

Crate Brewery5 min walk from Hackney Wick station
An old warehouse now urban-chic brewery and pizzeria, grab a table outside overlooking the River Lea. Tables will go quick though so get there early to make the most of it! You can book a table inside though if you aren’t quite quick enough! Check them out on Instagram.

Howling Hops Tank bar – 5 mins walk from Hackney Wick station
They have a lovely outdoor space and lots of room inside if, by this point, the sun is going to your head. They brew their beer on the premises too and have some fab food options – provided by Maize Blaze – Columbian street food with lots of flavours and washed down beautifully with a pint or two! Check them out on Instagram

Printhouse Bar and Restaurant – 10 mins from Stratford station
Booking not necessary . This place has a wonderful outdoor space with lots of socially distanced tables and it’s definitely worth the walk! It’s right next to the canal and serves delicious wood-fired pizzas and yummy hummus and all the drinks you could want! A family-owned place and great service too. Check them out on Instagram.

Roof East1 min from Stratford station
Need to book. On the top of a shopping centre in Stratford, Roof East is one of my favourite places to be – chilled vibes with great views.  A QR code will allow you to order drinks and food to your table and with the tables spaced apart really well, you feel safe. All staff are in masks and you’re taken to your table too.  Activities are available too if lounging isn’t your thing – crazy golf, batting cages, and curling. Check them out on Instagram.

The Stratfordopposite Stratford International station
Booking not necessary but recommended
An opportunity to relax in understated luxury on the terrace of this gorgeous brasserie. Attentive service and with options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner covered it can fit in with any of your plans this week to soak up some sunshine. Their bottomless brunch also starts again on Saturday and I’ve heard it’s fabulous. Check them out on Instagram.

The great outdoors

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park5 mins walk from Stratford station
In the shadows of Westfield shopping Centre is one of the ‘new parks on the block’ designed for the Olympic Games in 2010. It has miles of wide footpaths that are great for cycling and walkers alike. Then dotted around everywhere are grassy areas to sit and picnic, park benches, and a couple of playground areas that have been reopened. Check them out on Instagram.

Grab some picnic food and head on down with the family or make a detour via East Village and pick up some snacks from some of the great food places listed here. Coffee, cakes, sandwiches and smoothies are all on offer!

Victoria Park – lots of different ways to get there. Check it out here.
It’s one of my favourite parks in London. Think massive green fields (made for social distancing) huge trees, water features, a Chinese Pagoda, and a skate park. Pretty much something for everyone! I’d take a picnic blanket and some drinks and a picnic or hold out for Victoria Park Market on Sundays to indulge in some tasty street food. Check them out on Instagram.

Okay, now I’ve written this I feel like I should take the rest of the week off work and make the most of this glorious weather! Who’s with me?
