Your guide to enjoying the big screen from the great outdoors in Hertfordshire

By Emma McNamee – 11th April 2020

Long summer days.  Sunshine.  Lots of green open space, often with the backdrop of a stately country manor house.  Surely this makes for the perfect combination to enjoy a big screen movie from the great outdoors whilst respecting social-distancing requirements.

I’ve been on a mission to find out about all the places in Hertfordshire that enable you to enjoy a pop-up cinema experience either from the luxury of your car at a drive-in venue, or lounging on a deckchair or blanket on your own piece of green space.

Picnic and popcorn friendly, here’s your low down of all our local Hertfordshire open-air cinema hot spots that have screenings over the next couple of months, subject of course to weather conditions.  We are in England after all.

Hertfordshire County Showground

From The Lost Boys to a Rocketman Sing-along they’ve got a drive-in movie schedule running until 16th August.   VIP experience also available in a 1950s Ford Galaxie with front row view and a built-in touch screen to order your food and drinks.

Pendley Manor, Tring

From The Greatest Showman to Toy Story this new outdoor cinema experience in Tring, brought to you by Chilfest, lets you bring your own chairs and blankets to set up camp in your own piece of green space.  Screenings take place on Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays through to September, with films and tickets announced weekly.

Knebworth House

The Luna Drive-In Cinema has several locations, their Hertfordshire one being set in the beautiful grounds of Knebworth House, providing the perfect backdrop to a classic drive-in cinema experience under the stars.  Currently they’re just listing films until August 2nd, so you’ll need to get in real quick!

Hatfield House

From Dirty Dancing to Harry Potter, the Luna Cinema at Hatfield House has screenings from 22-27 September.  There’s a dedicated event car park from which you walk to the site, bringing your own chairs, blankets and goodies.  The stunning backdrop of Hatfield House, dating back to 1611 and set within 42 acres of Hertfordshire countryside, makes this a beautiful setting to enjoy the big screen.

So grab your popcorn and drink of choice to enjoy the outdoor cinema experience under the stars at one of these fabulous venues.
