The Best Lockdown Food Delivery Services in and around Chesterfield

By Molly Scott – 12th June 2020

Live to eat?

Let’s face it, the last few months have been pretty horrific. Food has definitely been one of my highlights. Our weekly Friday night takeaway has become almost sacred. We have tried many, these are my favourites…

Fabulous local finds

If you live anywhere near Chesterfield, Sheffield, Barnsley or Derby I highly recommend downloading the City Grab app a food delivery service operated by City Taxis. We’ve been impressed with the service. The order tracking function is really helpful. I would much rather give my money to a local company. Moreover, City Grab have already donated over £7,000 to local charities including Ashgate Hospicecare and Chesterfield Royal Hospital Charity.

Holiday food (minus the holiday)

One of my favourite options is our local Turkish restaurant, Afat’s Grill. I’ve founded it offers the freshest, healthiest tasting takeaway food out of everywhere we’ve tried. Simple ingredients, cooked well. I tend to order the Chicken Grill for my main course – large chunks of succulent chicken breast served with perfectly cooked rice and a beautiful rainbow salad. A little hack – you add free bread and olives to your order (under the ‘extras’ section of the menu).

If Mediterranean food floats your boat, check out Odyssey Greek restaurant. We have yet to try their takeaway food (partly because the menu is very limited – completely understandable under the current circumstances) but have always loved dining in the restaurant. You can read my previous recommendation here.

Healthier options

Another potentially healthy option is Qoozies, a much loved Chesterfield institution which is usually serving up pancakes, smoothies and health food, fast food style in its pretty restaurant. We’ve tended to use Qoozies for a weekend breakfast treat (albeit abandoning the healthy options). Having breakfast delivered has to be the ultimate indulgence. I’ve become somewhat addicted to their Biscoff and strawberry pancake. They have also started stocking the most amazing Wellbeck Bakery cruffins (a croissant, muffin hybrid).

Wood fired pizza

Pizza Pi is definitely worth checking out. Pizza is probably my favourite food of all time but my husband isn’t a fan (just plain wrong I know) and there isn’t a whole lot else on the menu so we haven’t ordered from here as often as I would have liked… but if you love pizza as much as me, you need to try this place.

Something special:

For something a bit more special, I’d recommend Casa’s dining at home service. We did this for our wedding anniversary, given that we couldn’t do our usual weekend away. This is definitely a cut above your usual takeaway, with prices to match.

To start I ordered the goats cheese, beetroot and walnut salad. The flavours worked together beautifully and I enjoyed every single mouthful. Hubby had the ham terrine, both of our dishes were exceptionally well presented.

I have to say the main course choices didn’t really set my heart on fire. If I know we’re having three courses, I like to choose a ‘lighter’ main such as fish. The one fish dish was curried monkfish with Bombay potatoes which didn’t really appeal. The chicken breast stuffed with spinach and sun dried tomatoes, wrapped in Parma ham and served with a sauce of choice sounded divine but I couldn’t quite reconcile spending £18 on that when it was being potentially delivered in a polystyrene box. With retrospect that was a mistake as Casa have absolutely nailed the dining at home experience. Overall we were impressed with the quality of food provided.

The Galleon Steakhouse:

You might have gathered by now that my husband and I have wildly different tastes in food. Somewhere we both enjoy is the Galleon Steakhouse. Saturday in our house is ‘Steak Saturday’ so this gets my hubby’s seal of approval. I can’t my head around the idea of steak being delivered but there are LOADS of other options. I’ve particularly enjoyed the salmon with hollandaise sauce and herbed new potatoes. The pâté is also exceptional

Other options:

All of the above are on the City Grab app.

Maison mes Amis have their own delivery service. You can order via their website. They deliver evening meals, afternoon tea and Sunday lunches. My husband had the most amazing mushrooms in a creamy vermouth sauce. He also accidentally covered my sticky toffee pudding in gravy (mistaking it for caramel sauce). Not sure I have forgiven him for that quite yet!

Launching this weekend is Bottle & Thyme’s delivery service, again operated directly by them. Brunches, coffees, cocktails and beautifully presented sharing platters are available for collection or delivery within a three mile radius. We have yet to try, but Bottle & Thyme is one of my favourite places for pretty much everything in Chesterfield.

If you don’t mind collecting your own, the Tickled Trout in Barlow are cooking their amazing sourdough pizzas for collection. You can read my previous review here.

Further afield:

When I used to live in Belper, two of my regular haunts, Nourish at No 44 and the White Hart in Duffield are doing dine at home services. I imagine both are superb. Arthur’s is a new addition to Belper since I moved, so no personal experience, but I would definitely be checking this place out.

I have also heard good things about LorentesDining Room and Wonky Table all in Derby.

Stella’s Kitchen in Eyam comes exceptionally well recommended for home cooked Afro-Caribbean food

Let me know in the comments if I have missed any other Derbyshire gems.
