RECOMMENDATION | Junkyard Golf Club, Manchester

By Sarah Kowalyszyn – 23rd May 2019

Why I love Junkyard Golf Club
I love it because I may be a grown-up but I felt like I could be a big kid in there, but with a cocktail in my hand at all times. It’s really whacky and weird, and we laughed our way around 2 out of 3 golf courses.

Worth paying a babysitter?
Absolutely – there aren’t many places like this around so it’s well worth visiting for some evening fun with your mates. That being said, I reckon it would be great for older kids as well (just check age restrictions on their website).

You Can Expect
Indoor crazy golf with different themed courses, complete with enough bars to keep the drinks flowing and some very strange (and curiously creepy) golf challenges. Neon lights, UV décor, impressive props, great tunes and serious laughs.

Value for money
7 – it’s almost a tenner per person per golf course, and 1 course may not feel like it lasts long enough. The food is cheap however, and the drinks are standard bar prices in Manchester. For my cooler and younger sister-in-laws’s birthday, she tends to ask me and Kov to take her out somewhere quirky. It was a no-brainer when we decided to surprise her with this gem. Situated on the very cool First Street in the city centre, Junkyard Golf Club is easy to find on the corner in a big glass building with its huge logo printed over the entrance.

Once you’re in you forget about the modern glass exterior; the atmosphere shifts to dim lighting and black walls, with neon signs, pops of bright colour and music that makes you want to dance up the stairs. There is a small bar with some seating, and stairs that take you up to the main event.

Once upstairs you enter a larger room with a reception to check in/buy rounds of golf, a cloakroom and the main bar. More neon lights and bright patterns against black walls catch the eye. We checked in first as we had pre-booked online and the staff were super friendly and excited for us. The bar is industrial looking, with corrugated metal sheets wrapped around and steel bar stools. Very fitting with the “junkyard” theme. Here we ordered some very tasty and unusual cocktails, before heading into a dark corridor leading from the bar to the golf courses with neon lights to lead the way. A member of staff was waiting for us and we handed over our tickets in return for a golf club and UV golf ball each. This was pretty exciting.

We were directed into our first golf course named “Gary”, which was an immediate and very welcome sensory overload – we were going down slides, climbing up and down stairs and dancing around in rooms decorated with UV walls. One course wasn’t enough, so we went back to the reception to buy another game. Course “Bozo” was next, which was a lot more challenging and full of sinister clowns, skulls and a hall of mirrors. Despite my mild fear of clowns, this course was my favourite. I don’t want to give away any more than that about the courses or I’ll spoil all the surprises!

Each hole is well thought out (they even provide an easier option with some of them in case any players are struggling) and the décor and props are seriously impressive. You really do need to see it all with your own eyes to appreciate it!

After about an hour and a half of completing both courses, we headed back to the main bar for more drinks and snacks. We grabbed a table and went for hotdogs, cocktails and beers. The food and drink are actually quite decent, especially the interesting cocktails. However, the food is more like cinema snacks rather than meals, which is fine for a place like this where its main purpose is to play crazy golf. It was a Monday night and the atmosphere was still fun and lively.

There is a photo booth at the exit of the golf courses where you can go in and have a gif made of you for free, which was a really cool touch to the experience. Overall, Junkyard Golf Club is 10 out of 10 for FUN!

The Menu
Think hotdogs, nachos, popcorn and sweets for food, and American beers, quirky cocktails and shots for drinks. There are also the usual soft drinks, spirits and small selection of wine. They even have their own pilsner beer on the menu!
