REVIEW | Girls Afternoon Glamour at Charles Worthington, West London

29th November 2019

By Annette Kellow

The saying goes ‘Life isn’t perfect, but your hair can be,’ and being a busy mother with a million and one things to do, sometimes my hair takes a back seat in the style stakes!

Combine this with the change of seasons, over styling, and my hair has been what can only be described as lacklustre lately.

So when I was invited to Charles Worthington to experience Girls Afternoon Glamour, I literally jumped at the chance!

Girls Afternoon Glamour is an experience unique to Charles Worthington, who is one of the most prestigious and renowned hairdressing names in the U.K.

Charles has won many of the industry’s most prestigious accolades, developed an award-winning portfolio of products sold worldwide, styled A-list celebrities, and collaborated with some of the best names in the fashion and beauty industry. All this whilst seamlessly remaining a family business.

Located on Great Queen Street in the heart of Covent Garden, the salon is set in a Georgian townhouse over five floors.

On entering it has a quintessentially elegant English feel about it and I am seated by a friendly receptionist in the drawing room – the hang out area for clients to relax before and after treatments.

I’m there for my go-to favourite- a classic blow dry- but this one is with a twist!

Charles Worthington have teamed with Brigits Bakery for a sumptuous afternoon tea and blow dry experience- otherwise known as Girls Afternoon Glamour.

B Bakery as it’s known (which is handily also based in Covent Garden) is a relaxing sanctuary of afternoon tea, cakes and sandwiches. They are also the inventors of the iconic London Tea Bus Tour, which captures the heart of city culture, and serves a sumptious afternoon tea on a double decker bus.

Today they have a huge platter of traditional delicacies on offer including cucumber sandwiches, ham and cheese rolls and smoked salmon pretzels. Their sweet treats include lemon meringue tart, vanilla jam choux and chocolate cake. Of course I had to try them all!

After tucking in to a couple of sandwiches, and sipping on a glass of their finest fizz, I had a hair consultation to discuss how I like my hair styled (volume with a little curl please).

I was then taken through to have it throuoghly washed, topped with the most dreamiest head massage ever (which to be honest relaxed me to the point of almost falling asleep!) And then the magic began.

My hairdresser was efficient in style but paid attention to detail, and within 45 minutes my hair had less frizz and lots of bounce. All this with an abundance of delicious edibles, which of course, always enhances an experience!

I want away feeling calm, confident- and a little bit spoilt too.

Girls Afternoon Glamour is perfect for ladies who lunch, birthdays, work events, or simply for someone who likes to indulge in some pampering. Afternoon tea and hairdressing? What a wonderful combination.

Children’s Wellbeing | Kids these days – they’ve got it made – or have they?

I’m a primary school teacher and I’m a mum to a beautiful, bright and bubbly six-year-old. I witness the ups and downs of wellbeing in children every day. Every parent faces the same dilemma – how to ensure the wellbeing of our children – particularly from a mental health perspective in a world that is more pressured than ever in more ways than one.

REVIEW | Teddy Bears Picnic at Elements Coffee House in Derby

I had already heard good things about Elements. Despite only just celebrating their first birthday, they’ve been nominated for two awards in Marketing Derby’s food and drink awards (Best Newcomer and Best Customer Service). Thanks to their beautifully curated Instagram feed they were firmly on my Girl About radar.

So when Elements got in touch to invite us to try their teddy bear’s picnic themed children’s menu I jumped at the opportunity. I can’t tell you the last time I enjoyed a delicious lunch out with my toddler. We have loads of fun but I’d pretty much resigned myself that civilised lunches at nice places were largely a thing of the past. I was intrigued to see whether this was the answer. In the week or so before, Lily was bubbling with excitement. I remained somewhat sceptical.

RECOMMENDATION | The Stratford Brasserie, Stratford – East London

Thursday night a couple of weeks ago and my Dad was in town. My step-mum had gone to an ABBA event at the O2 and he didn’t really fancy getting all dressed up like a Super Trooper, so we decided to go out for a bite to eat. I’d been to The Stratford once before when it first opened in the summer and was impressed with their Stratford burger, so thought it was worth having another look.
