A takeaway from the charming George Street Canteen in the Cathedral district of St. Albans, by Girl About Hertfordshire

By Emma McNamee – 10th February 2020

A warm welcome and freshly home-baked delights await:

It’s fabulous to see that so many of our local eateries are benefiting from this glorious weather as they adapt and maneuver to the new norm of takeaways and deliveries.  I can’t help but think that if the sun didn’t have its hat on quite so much, there wouldn’t be quite as many people enjoying the great outdoors and stopping for a coffee, a cold drink and a bite to eat along their way.  I have to say though, it makes me happy when I see a little queue of safely social distancing people supporting our local establishments, as is always the case when I pass by George Street Canteen.

George Street Canteen in the centre of St. Albans has been a firm favourite for a while, set with the beautiful backdrop of St. Albans Cathedral and with a fantastic brunch menu to boot.   They reopened again a couple of weeks ago offering a take away only service and have a small selection of rather yummy pastry based cooked items, as well as some comfort cookie and cake treats.  Plus a range of hot and cold drinks to include speciality coffees.

They’re operating a one in, one out, one way system which works well and you can admire the Abbey in the background, or their floral mural, whilst you wait your turn.   We’ve stopped here twice now whilst out on a weekend bike ride – my husband for his daily dose of caffeine in the form of a latte, and the two of us unable to resist one of their chorizo sausage rolls.  Mouthwatering.  Particularly if you time it well just as they’re coming out of the oven freshly baked!

There’s also a small selection of shop items – how fab are the St. Albans painted mugs you can see in my photos?

All in all, it’s well worth a stop.  As well as the Cathedral,  you’ve also got Verulamium Park on its doorstep, so plenty of green open space to have a break and   find a nice grassy area to enjoy your take out.

As I write this, they are open Wednesdays to Sundays from 9am to 2pm  – but to be sure of their opening hours and for more information go to:
