RECOMMENDATION | Fun & Food at Dice & A Slice in Colchester -Essex

By Katie Byrne – 28th July 2019

Found yourself with an hour or two to wile away? Head to Dice & A Slice in Colchester – home to a million boardgames (okay, maybe not literally) and a mouthwatering menu, it’s the perfect spot to unwind and have fun.

Home to an atmosphere so chilled it’s practically served with ice, it’s hard to believe that the site of Dice & A Slice used to be a bar. The cafe is home to over 400 board games, from the mainstream – Monopoly, Scrabble, chess – to the more niche (anyone for a round of Mafiozoo?) There are also games available for buying, too; if you’re looking for a brilliant new board game to take home, this is the place to visit, people. Can’t make the trek to Essex? Order online – they ship all around the UK.

You have a big decision to make when you step foot over the Dice & A Slice threshold, namely: do you want to play a game?

Nope, we’re not talking menacing Jigsaw-style; rather, you can choose whether you simply want to unwind over a cuppa, or if you want to try out one of those 100s of games at the same time. You can pay for an hour or for whole-day access, and can take your pick from any game in the room.

There are countless shelves to explore and whether you’re playing two-player or in a bigger group, you’ll be comfortable accommodated; there are larger tables for taking over in multi-player games and if you’re playing one-on-one, there are cosy window seats to curl up in, too.

It’s also super child-friendly, both in terms of menu, space and games, so it’s great for a summer holiday go-to, as well.

Whether you play or not, there’s one thing you definitely will do: drool over the menu. From handmade cakes to dishes of shareable nachos, there’s something for even the hungriest of visitors. When we visited, Mike had a diner-esque strawberry milkshake and I had a pot of tea with a gluten-free peanut butter chocolate brownie that was incredible. In fact, it almost – almost! – softened the blow of losing Frustration…
