4 favourite vegan places – East London

By Lindsey Roberts – 24 July 2020

I’m not a vegan. Far from it. Okay, stay with me. I was a vegetarian for seven years (a teenage fad that lasted longer than expected) but was swayed by a bacon sandwich and now I eat meat. BUT, what I have discovered is that I enjoy vegan food. The flavours, the creativeness of the chefs, and the inventiveness that goes into creating some delicious meals. Gone are the days where vegan and vegetarian food consists of bland tofu and kale.

Over the past few months, I’ve frequented some DELICIOUS places in East London that I just wanted to share:

Genesis – Shoreditch
100% plant-based – I’d recommend the Korean BBQ wings and the aubergine fritters to start. Then go in hard for one of the burgers. They are DELICIOUS. It all is. Gorgeous food, a chilled and relaxed vibe. Oh and inside is cool too – think pastel pink decor, neon signs, and fabulous artwork adorning the walls. They also have a food stand in Old Spitalfields Market for you to takeaway.

Mooshies – Brick Lane
In and amongst the Indian restaurants that Brick Lane is renowned for is Mooshies. A vegan burger bar with a diner-feel – think more midweek meal or weekend lunch rather than a slap-up meal.

This was one of the first vegan places I visited with my wonderful friend Faye the Vegan. Yes, that is her full name. I was baffled by how the mozzarella sticks a) tasted like cheese and b) that it had melted. Have you tried melting vegan cheese before? Magic!

We Are Vegan Everything cafe – Hackney
The cutest cafe there ever was. And it’s more than just a cafe; think yoga classes, shelves full of books and a welcoming outdoor space to relax in the summertime. Homely feel with comfy sofas and cute decorations on every table. I’d recommend heading there for a delicious brunch, an oat milk cappuccino, and some amazing cake. Always save room for cake!

Absurd Vird – restaurants across London and the UK
A couple of weeks ago, we were treated to a takeaway from Absurd Vird’s Spitalfields branch. Delivered to my door and eaten in the comfort of my casual wear, what’s not to love? I’d recommend the Korean BBQ burger – it was massive and really tasty. It was served in a brioche bun and full to the brim of kimchi, pickled cucumber, and vegan sriracha mayo! We also ordered fries, onion rings, and coleslaw. It was an absolute feast and we had food babies for the rest of the evening.
