REVIEW | Forman’s Fish Restaurant – Fish Island in East London

Why I love Forman’s Fish Restaurant on Fish Island:
I love the fact that it’s a smokehouse first, restaurant second. The smokehouse has been around for over a century and is renowned in the restaurant and catering industry. It stays true to its heritage and values and the food is bloody brilliant.


Worth paying a babysitter?
Yes, yes, YES


Good food, decent wine and attentive service.


Value for money: 9/10


Setting the scene:

For years, my Dad has had a rule that while we’re at the dinner table, no phones allowed. So who else would I have considered to take with me to my first official review as Girl About East London where I simply HAD to take pictures of my food before we could tuck in? Yep, you guessed it.

Hidden in the shadows of the West Ham Stadium is a family run smoked salmon business that dates back to the 19th century. Attached to the smokehouse, which is still very much a working smokery and open for educational tours, is Forman’s restaurant, overlooking the canals.

Before you get to the main restaurant, there’s a small seating area where you can sit back, relax with a glass of English sparkling and watch the chefs hard at work in the kitchen. Which is exactly what we did as we perused the menu.


The Menu:

It’s small, but perfectly formed and unsurprisingly, salmon features heavily. Even if fish isn’t your thing, you can still take your pick from some of the meat dishes that are available for starters and mains. We chose to start with the salmon platter with caviar, which was just delicious. We had freshwater, farmed, hot and cured smoked salmon with amazing fried capers that melted in your mouth.

For main course I had seared smoked salmon (obviously) with mash, vine tomatoes and an onion tartlet. Once I’d taken all the pictures I needed to, my Dad tucked in to poached turbot with scallops and clams. It usually comes with a chorizo foam, but as Dad is a pescatarian, he opted for a white wine sauce instead.

We shared a portion of cauliflower cheese; although there are other delicious side dishes, the portion sizes are really generous so we didn’t need any more than that.

Tempted as I was to have a dessert, I went for a decaf cappuccino and a couple of complimentary macaroons (a nice touch to satisfy my sweet-tooth). My dad went for his version of caffeine after 10pm (a glass of red).

Interestingly the restaurant only serves English wine, English sparkling and British spirits from the bar. I think this was a bold decision by the restaurant owners ten years ago when it opened and impressive that it’s something they stand by now. Although ’If you must’ then there’s an option to sample something else – a Billecart-Salmon champagne. Get it? Nice touch. Which, is just one of many at this restaurant.
