A Wonderful Festive Occasion at The Ivy, York

By Laura Shepherd – 19th December 2020
What I loved about The Ivy

If you want to eat amazing food in a sophisticated but relaxed setting, then The Ivy really is a must.

Worth paying a babysitter?

Oh, absolutely. This is definitely for a romantic meal out.

A luxurious, yet cosy atmosphere. It’s gleaming and incredibly beautiful. You are made to feel really special.

Value for money:

Definitely 10/10

I have always wanted to visit The Ivy, since moving to York last year it has definitely been at the top of my list of places to go. Every single time I walked past the Ivy doors, my eyes would always wander to their marvellous floral frontage and now I would finally be able to step through the doors and venture inside. The Ivy Collection has a significant reputation and has restaurants in several UK cities including Harrogate, Leeds, Edinburgh and Manchester as well as their signature brasserie in London.

The Ivy York, situated on St Helen’s Square, is comfortably positioned in a prime location next to the likes of Betty’s tea rooms and other foodie hotspots in the heart of the city.  Charmed by the festive installation in the Brasserie’s entrance on the way in you are greeted with beautiful surroundings inside. The Ivy offers everything you would expect; from the moment you walk through the door you know that you are somewhere really special.

Overlooking the Mansion House, home to the Lord Mayor of York, the ever so scenic square looked stunning complete with sparkling Christmas lights, seasonal foliage and festive decorations which made for a wonderful romantic setting.

The Ivy offers a sophisticated dining experience without being too pretentious, it is glamourous but cosy and combines an air of tradition and luxury. With amazing art work decorating every inch of the walls it offered a vibrant and fun feeling to the evening. The dining rooms are spacious with a 1920’s charm, we were seated upstairs and the atmosphere was warm with a suitable hum where you didn’t feel as though you were talking too loud.

Our waitress was superb, she offered fantastic food and cocktail recommendations and was on hand all night ensuring our glasses were full and that we had everything we needed.

Having teamed up with Maker’s Mark, The Ivy are celebrating the festive period by offering a limited-edition cocktail menu and invite you along to enjoy too.

We most certainly did opt for a Christmas cocktail and they did not disappoint; we decided on the showstopping Gingerbread Manhattan (£9.75) which was small but perfectly formed, completed with Maker’s Mark Bourbon Whisky, stirred with Lillet Blanc and Lillet Rouge with a gingerbread spice syrup which was absolutely delicious. We also tried the Tokyo Snow (£9.95) the Winter’s Kiss (£10.95) and the Nashi Bellini (£9.25). In all honesty we could not pick a favourite, they were all packed full of flavour and made for a wonderful sharing experience.

I ordered the Twice-baked Cheese Souffle (£9.25) which comes with gratinated mature cheddar, Gouda and Edam cheese with cream sauce and grated black truffle. I think I could go as far as saying that it was quite possibly the best Cheese Souffle that I have ever tasted and definitely one for the cheese lovers. My fiancé went for the Beef tortellini (£9.50) – delicious braised beef with a delightful parmesan foam and crispy shallots. You can choose from a range of festive specials however we both went for chicken for our mains. Beautifully cooked and well-seasoned with a really flavoursome mushroom sauce with crunchy green beans, my Roast Chicken (£17.95) was absolutely divine. Pip really enjoyed his Chicken Milanese (£17.95) which came with a fried egg, Parmesan and truffle cream sauce. We shared a couple of sides with our mains, we chose the Truffle and Parmesan chips and the olive oil mashed potato, which made great additions to our meals. The parmesan on the chips were full of flavour and the mashed potato was so velvety, it melted in your mouth.

We had already decided what we wanted for dessert before we were even asked if we had room for one – the Chocolate Bombe. It was a Melting Chocolate Bombe with vanilla ice cream and a honeycomb centre with hot salted caramel sauce. The Ivy even say it themselves that this decadent dessert is not to be missed and they are absolutely right – it really was incredible. Placed on like a milk foam with hot salted caramel sauce poured on top it was delicious and well worth the £9.50.

We did, however, finish the evening with the cocktail classic – a Pornstar Martini. The first thing I noticed were the size of the meals, you got a really good portion and we were both really full after eating.

Please be assured that when you visit The Ivy York, you are in safe hands. The Ivy is a Covid-19 secure venue where temperatures are checked on entering and there is hand sanitizer on every table for guests to use. All of the staff are required to wear a face covering and tables were very well distanced apart. They have adopted a rigorous cleaning regime where every table was spotlessly cleaned after every guest and the venue had really high standards of health and safety.

A huge thank you to The Ivy, York for inviting us to enjoy a delicious festive menu.
