REVIEW | Festive Afternoon Tea at Oddfellows Hotel, Chester

What I loved about Festive Afternoon Tea at Oddfellows, Chester:

Oddfellows Hotel, located on Lower Bridge Street in Chester, is by far and away my favourite independent hotel in Cheshire. This elegant Georgian townhouse has been lovingly restored to create a quirky boutique hotel and restaurant. It is an absolute joy to see Oddfellows reopen its doors just in time for Christmas and I was delighted to be invited down to be one of the first to sample their new Festive Afternoon Tea menu available to hotel guests and visitors during December.

On arrival at Oddfellows, I sanitised my hands at the front entrance and climbed the stairs to be immediately welcomed warmly by the front of house staff. I visited on a Sunday afternoon so although the public areas of the hotel were quiet,  the soft soulful soundtrack filled the space and I instantly felt relaxed. After being shown to my window seat in the hotel’s main restaurant, with views out to the hidden garden, I was handed the Festive Afternoon Tea, Cocktail, and Gin Menus to peruse.

Oddfellows serve their Festive Afternoon Tea menu daily 12 pm -4 pm and there are a couple of menus to choose from; their Festive Afternoon Tea including sandwiches, scones, and a selection of cakes for £20.50 per person and a Festive Prestige Afternoon Tea for £26 per person which includes additional savoury snacks. A Children’s Afternoon Tea for ‘Little Elves’ is also available for £9.50 per child as well as a lighter Cream Tea for £5.50 per person. Festive Cocktails and Mulled wine are available to accompany alongside a full coffee and tea selection.

Festive Afternoon Tea can be served in all areas of the hotel including the spectacular wood-panneled cocktail bar, the outdoor covered heated booths (perfect for groups), and their private dining room (on request).

Worth paying a babysitter?

Absolutely! This would be a wonderful treat for you and a loved one in the run up to Christmas. Chester is looking particularly Christmassy with the lights sparkling above the high street and the city centre shops are the ideal place to pick up some last-minute presents before the big day. I always describe Oddfellows as being a sanctuary off the high street; a real hidden gem and the perfect spot to come and relax in style. Take a seat, enjoy a mulled wine, and soak up the festive atmosphere in the hotel.

Why not consider booking one of the hotel’s  Christmas Overnight Stays from £99.50 in total and include a Festive Afternoon Tea for a truly luxurious breakaway. Let’s face it, we all deserve the opportunity to feel relaxed and pampered, particularly during the run up to Christmas, this year more than any!

Children are also welcomed and well catered for at Oddfellows, and their 2 bedroom apartments offer the perfect family-friendly base to explore Chester during the Christmas period. Festive Afternoon Tea with Santa is available on Sunday 13th and Sunday 20th December with the opportunity to meet the Big Man himself and take away a present. Make sure to book your space quickly to avoid disappointment.

Expect:

A small, boutique hotel that oozes charm in bucket loads and the ideal spot to kick off the Christmas celebrations with their Festive Afternoon Tea. Oddfellows is friendly and informal yet smart and sophisticated in equal measures; it possesses the rare ability to appeal to, and welcome, everyone. A real hidden gem in Chester and a true asset to the hospitality scene in Cheshire as a whole. If you’ve not been to Oddfellows, I urge you to make a visit.

Value for money: (out of 10)

9 out of 10.

For £20.50 I received a selection of delicious finger sandwiches; including my personal favourite, pulled turkey on brioche with a brussel sprout coleslaw; homemade scone with jam and cream, and a selection of mini patisseries served on traditional fine bone china. The flavours were innovative, exciting, and exceptionally playful. Overall the whole experience felt special and brilliantly festive – a real treat!
