One of the prettiest seasons!

Here are some of my favourite Autumnal walks in North Yorkshire.

By Natalie Johnson – 5th October 2020

Like many of you, I just adore Autumn. The rich colours, the falling leaves, and freshly ploughed fields are just some of the things that make this one of my most favourite times of the year. And with the way the world is at the moment, we all need outdoor space to enjoy and take in the sounds and sights of this stunning season.

Sutton Bank, Harlow Carr, Osmotherly, and Roseberry Topping are some fabulous walks in North Yorkshire but I’ve chosen some little hidden gems that will definitely not disappoint and get you craving that pumpkin spice latte.

Get wrapped up and get those wellies or walking boots on!

Leyburn Shawl, Preston-under-scar, and Wensley

Approx 6 miles

Starting at Leyburn Shawl walking along its limestone ridge with magnificent views over Pen hill and rolling Wensleydale. Taking you over fields, streams, and through woodland. It is the perfect place to see Autumn in all its glory.

If you love your birds like me, this is the walk for you. We often see barn owls and buzzards in flight, which is such an amazing sight.

Did you know legend has it that ‘The Shawl’ got its name because Mary Queen of Scots who was imprisoned at Castle Bolton (around 6 miles from Leyburn) managed to escape and fled along the woodland, she caught her shawl on a branch, revealing to the soldiers that she had passed this way.

Your walk takes you through the attractive Yorkshire villages of Preston-under-scar and Wensley. You could even have a little pit stop at the lovely country pub The Three Horseshoes, they do great food and a tasty cider!  www.thethreehorseshoeswensley.co.uk

Thorp Perrow – Arboretum and gardens

Bedale DL8 2PS

If there’s anywhere in North Yorkshire that allows you to take in the beauty of the changing seasons, it’s Thorp Perrow. Especially in Autumn, it really is spectacular.

The Arboretum covers 100 acres and is laid out in sections from A to Z, plus Milbank Pinetum, and Springs Wood. They are all connected by paths, grassy walks, and avenues.

The vivid colours of the leaves are just mesmerizing, and I often feel like I’m walking through an American movie set on the Hallmark channel (if you know what I mean).

During the month of October Thorp Perrow always have a Spooktacular Halloween trail, which is fun for all the family and gives you plenty of laughs along the way.

Circular walk from Richmond along the river Swale via Easby Abbey

Starting at the pretty historic market town of Richmond and heading down towards the river Swale to Easby Abbey (founded in 1152) this walk takes around 1 hour 40 mins, but we always make an afternoon or morning of it.

I love this walk particularly in Autumn when the air is crisp, the sun is golden, and the trees are cinnamon dipped. Walking along the river Swale is peace itself, being able to watch the fast-flowing rapids and waterfalls just adds to the ambiance.

Once you get to the impressive ruins of Easby Abbey, which is free entry, you can go off and explore for as long as you like. We often stop for a flask of tea about now before we set off back to Richmond.
