The Best Family-Friendly Shepherd’s Hut Staycation

By Jenny Schippers – 6th October 2020

Our Family-Friendly Shepherd’s Hut Staycation in Mid Wales

Back in July 2020, just as we came out of the first National Lockdown we took the opportunity to stay at Holidays Wales located near Rhayader, Powys in one of their Shepherd’s Huts. Having spent most of lockdown 1.0 looking longingly at quirky accommodation suitable for a family-friendly short break when the time allowed, I made sure to jump at the opportunity of booking a weekend away as soon as the Welsh border reopened and we were able to travel again.

Instagram Find

I first came across @holidayswales on Instagram and having discussed our requirements with the lovely owner Gemma she advised that ’Hillside View’, their four-berth Shepherds Hut, would be perfect for us as it sleeps, two adults and two children. The added bonus and main selling point of Holidays Wales, aside from the beauty of the site, is that each hut/pod has its own hot tub and for the price (approx. £150 per night, 2-night minimum stay) we thought it represented good value for money.

About Holidays Wales

Holidays Wales has four shepherds’ huts (three that sleep two people and one that sleeps four), four pods (each that sleep two people), four rental homes (varying in size), and now a growing number of hobbit homes. The latter being fully booked until late 2021 and beyond thanks to an endorsement by the lovely Stacey Solomon and family who have recently stayed and have subsequently propelled this family-run business into the stratosphere! Although you will struggle to book a stay in their hobbit homes any time soon, I wanted to shine a light on this small site anyway as they have a variety of accommodation that is available and still takes advantage of the beautiful location and nearby attractions that Stacey and her family highlighted during their stay.

Travelling to Holidays Wales from Cheshire

As we travelled from Cheshire, we decided to break the journey in both directions and booked National Trust tickets for Erdigg Hall on the way down and Chirk Castle for the way home. The journey time to Mid Wales View from the North West is approximately 2.5 hours so a break for lunch/toilets in both directions worked well when travelling with small children. As Holidays Wales is self-catering, we travelled with all our supplies from home for ease. The bustling market town of Rhayader is a short drive away however and had plenty of amenities including a couple of convenience stores, takeaways, and pubs so you could arrive with nothing and stock up locally.

Hillside View, our shepherds hut for the weekend, had a decent-sized kitchen including a standard size fridge, full oven, kettle, toaster, and utensils. There was a small four-seater table inside as well as a table/chairs outside in the garden. The bathroom, although small, was fitted out with an amazingly powerful shower, toilet, and sink.

On Arrival at Holidays Wales

On arrival at Holidays Wales, we were personally greeted by Gemma the owner who checked we had everything we needed. There was a welcome basket on arrival and milk in the fridge which is always a thoughtful touch. We were shown how to use the hot tub and there was a full visitor book detailing how to change the lounge seating to the bunk bed design for sleeping and a list of local attractions/takeaway numbers.

The interior and exterior of the huts are of an extremely high standard; the fixtures and fittings are great quality and the bed/towels felt luxurious. The private gardens that accompany each pod/hut are self-contained and suitable for children/dogs. They also have a fire pit and as previously mentioned a large hot tub. Although the gardens are not screened off, the layout of the site is such that you do not feel overlooked at all whilst in the hot tub which is nice. A couple of other points which I believe are a huge bonus when travelling with children, free Wi-Fi, and Netflix!

Outdoor Activities Nearby

Whilst sitting in the garden of your hut/pod, you can watch the Red Kites circling overhead across the Valley which is truly a sight to be seen. If you want to get closer to these incredible creatures then the Red Kite Centre at Gigrin Farm is a must. Wild Red Kites are fed every day of the year at this rehabilitation centre, so it is possible to get much close to these beautiful birds. Make sure to check the website for opening times and ticket information (pre-booked tickets advised).

Other local attractions include the magnificent Victorian dams of the Elan Valley and their surrounding paths/walks. Within the 2000 acres of nature reserve, there is a network of six dams and vast amounts of countryside to discover. The Cambrian Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop and from here there are countless trails into the mountains and along the Wye Valley. If the beach is more your style, then the pretty seaside town of Aberystwyth and Cardigan Bay are merely an hour’s drive away.

** Always keep up to date with local lockdown restrictions**

We loved our stay at Holidays Wales, and cannot wait to return for a stay in on of the site’s unique hobbit homes.
