The Bow Room at Grays Court

Why I love Grays Court in York
Grays Court in York is perfect for romantic, special occasion dining – leave your gaggle of girlfriends at home and get your other half to treat you to a night of candle-lit amour at The Bow Room – the hotel’s elegant fine-dining restaurant that looks out into the private walled and well stocked garden and out over the city’s ancient walls.

 

Worth paying a babysitter?
Without a shadow of a doubt. Better still, book the grandparents in overnight and string the romance out in one of the hotel’s 12 exquisite rooms.

 

Expect:
To fall in love all over again over 10 courses of seriously good grub in the heart of ancient York.

 

Value for money: 7/10 – you get what you pay for.

It’s £70 per person for no less than 10 courses – expect to eat the most exquisite food in what could possibly be Yorkshire’s most discreet of romantic settings.

 

Setting the scene:
It’s likely that you’ve never come across Grays Court – simply because it’s tucked away like a very special little secret out of sight from the main drags around York, and this makes this small-but-perfectly-formed luxury boutique hotel all the more special.

 

Before I move onto our impeccable five-course tasting menu, it’s only fair to mention that Grays Court is the only hotel in York with private access to the city’s mediaevil city walls and the view of the Minster from some of the hotel’s well-appointed rooms is incredible. There’re only 12 rooms making this little piece of 12th century Jacobean real-estate more like a rather large and rather plush family home than a hotel.

 

Teetering across the hotel’s cobbled courtyard in one’s posh heels on a dark and misty evening with hundreds of fairy lights twinkling above, crisscrossing through the courtyard’s trees set the scene for something special.

The menu – we were served a 5 course tasting menu
With oysters, a steak tartare made from 200-day old aged steak and Yorkshire forced Rhubarb making up one of the two divine and decent-sized desserts, I was super excited to get started.

 

The oysters came first – big and juicy, served on a bed of rocks (decoration only!), with caviar and dehydrated milk which provided a crunchy topping, – this ‘snack’ really was quite an explosion of delicious tastes and textures.

 

Cured halibut with blood orange followed – the tartness of the orange cut right through the raw halibut. Served on a charcoal coloured plate, this dramatic little fish dish was light and lovely to look at.

 

Possibly my favorite course – the 200-day aged steak tartare with mushroom was absolutely incredible. I’m a sucker for anything raw and a decent steak tartare is no exception. The finely chopped and velvety soft, deliciously diced steak was perfectly seasoned and topped with the obligatory raw egg yolk – an excellent quality, free-range, locally sourced, organic egg none-the-less with a deep orange yolk that penetrated the steak when I stabbed it with my folk, creating a silky plate of absolute carnivorous joy.

 

Salt-aged duck with beetroot and coffee followed – I’m not a massive lover of duck if I’m honest – I would never order it unless it was a small part of the bigger tasting menu picture. I reserved judgement until I’d sampled a folk full the pink breast, fat on, with the beetroot and coffee jus. It was rich and warm and dark and delectable and an absolute delight. The combination of sweet baby beetroot, fatty pink duck breast and bitter coffee jus was, quite simply mouthwatering.

 

Not one but two desserts followed. Locally grown forced Rhubarb served with crème fraiche came first – the rhubarb was cooked to perfection, with just enough sweetness and bite, followed by the most incredible tart with a sweet potato and butter filling and topped with dark chocolate shavings.

 

I can’t choose a favorite from the two, really, I can’t. they were both very different but equally as divine.

 

An even at The Bow Room is an absolute treat for anyone looking to impress their other half.
