Top 25 Places to Eat Out Help Out in Derbyshire

By Molly Scott – 7th August 2020

By now you’ll be familiar with the government’s scheme to encourage diners back into eating out. Every Monday to Wednesday you can enjoy 50% off your total food bill (excluding alcohol, up to a maximum of ten pounds per person) at a huge range of cafes, pubs and restaurants. The full list can be found here but this is my top 25.

Cafés

The Bottle Kiln, West Hallam. A gorgeous gift shop and tea room serving beautiful homemade cakes, great coffee and glasses of fizz. Check out their tranquil garden.

Cafe Aroma, Spondon. A popular neighbourhood café that is very far removed from an average greasy spoon. Don’t leave without one of their epic treat boxes.

Koo, Chesterfield. Booking is highly recommended at this popular neighbourhood café – ask for one of the outside tables and enjoy people watching. Great coffee, cakes and breakfast and lunch menus.

Vintage Tea Rooms, Chesterfield. A quirky café serving the most spectacular cakes and light bites on mismatched vintage china.

Elements Tea & Coffee House, Derby. I really love this family run establishment. Expert, barista coffee, a huge selection of teas and service with a smile.

BEAR, Iron Gate, Derby. The ultimate hipster coffee shop. There’s also a branch situated within the Intu shopping centre but I prefer the atmosphere here.

PipTree Café at Collyers Nurseries, Borrowash. A beautiful café with plenty of outside seating. I visited recently and was really impressed with how well organised the increased safety measures were.

Pubs

Junction, Chesterfield. Situated on the much loved Chatsworth Road (brimming with independents) Junction has an attractive beer garden, decent menu (including coffee and cake) – in particular, check out their halloumi salads.

The Hunloke Arms, Wingerworth. A much loved pub on the outskirts of Chesterfield. Go for the pizzas, meat sticks and bathtub cocktails.

Joiners Arms, Quarndon. One of the main draws to the Joiners is their attractive outside area, adorned with wisteria and fairy lights.

Restaurants

Afat’s Grill, Whittington, Chesterfield. An authentic Turkish restaurant serving up expertly grilled meats and fish, accompanied with the most wonderful rice and fresh, vibrant salads.

Nonnas, Chesterfield. Also great for an aperitivo on the terrace, Nonnas is a popular contemporary Italian restaurant. Situated on Chatsworth Road.

Odyssey Greek restaurant, Chesterfield. Recreate sunny holiday memories at this beautifully authentic Greek restaurant. Read my previous blog post explaining the joys of Odyssey in more detail here.

Bottle & Thyme, Chesterfield. One of my all time favourites! Bottle & Thyme is great for everything: from brunch, to coffee and cake, to lunch, to cocktails, to a proper restaurant meal. Booking is strongly recommended although walk-ins are welcome.

Lombardi’s, Chesterfield. A bustling, vibrant, authentic Italian restaurant just off the ‘Doughnut’ roundabout in Chesterfield. Everything is delicious but the Napolitan style pizzas are out of this world.

The Tickled Trout, Barlow, Chesterfield. Another one of my all time favourites. The Trout is faultless – and does everything from a sourdough pizza to really quite posh meals. I promise you will not be disappointed! Read more about why I love this gastro pub here.

Anoki, Derby and Burton. Popular, upmarket contemporary Indian dining.

Seven, Pride Park, Derby. This modern, all day venue is perfect for relaxed yet stylish eating and drinking. I went recently and felt really reassured by the safety measures in place. Try the elderflower martini!

The Coolstone, Eyam. Situated in the picturesque village of Eyam with a fascinating history, The Coolstone offers stylish dining and expertly mixed cocktails.

Fine dining

The Peacock at Rowsley, nr Bakewell. Part of the Haddon estate, The Peacock is a sublime option for fine dining. Enjoy an apertif in overlooking their manicured lawns and then delight in an expertly executed menu. Read more about why I love The Peacock here.

Fischer’s, Baslow. For the ultimate in luxury, stylish sophistication, impeccable service, and the very finest award-winning cuisine. Limited availability.

Cavendish at Baslow. Part of the Chatsworth Estate, the Cavendish offers sublime fine dining. Read Girl About Sheffield’s previous review here.

Family friendly

Mamaccino, Eastmoor, Chesterfield. A normally popular and much loved play café. Sadly the toys have had to be removed to be compliant with the current regulations – but you can book a family table in what would normally be the play area. This is an enclosed space so it’s safe (and less stressful) for younger children to wander about a bit. You are welcome to take your own toys if you have booked this family table, as Mamaccino have factored in extra cleaning time between each session.

Elements Tea and Coffee House, Derby. I’ve always found this family run venue to be extremely family friendly. The teddy bears’ picnic themed kids menu kept my little one entertained long enough for me to enjoy my food (a novelty!). Read my previous review here.

Nadee, Findern, Derby. Family run Indian restaurant situated on the canal. Large beer garden complete with a good sized sandpit, ideal for entertaining little ones whilst you eat. Food served from 4pm so perfect for accommodating little ones bedtimes. Read my full review here.

RECOMMENDATION

The vast majority of these suggestions are Girl About recommendations. This means that it was not gifted in return for a review but paid in full by me and the venue had no idea that I was there. We only recommend places we absolutely love, and places that we know you’ll love too!

However, a couple of the suggestions are the result of previous gifted invites to review (The Peacock and Elements). There was absolutely no obligation to include them here – and I have only done so because I genuinely rate them.
