Derbyshire Christmas Gift Guide

By Molly Scott – 6 November 2020

Shop Local this Christmas

I know most of you are just as passionate about supporting lovely, local independent businesses as I am so I’m not going to preach to the converted. We know just how important it is to shop small, local and thoughtfully, now more than ever. Let’s also remember that times are hard. Please resist the urge to over spend. I know I would rather receive a thoughtful card or something made with love than to think anyone had spent beyond their means to give something to me. I would be delighted at an IOU for a few hours babysitting (to be redeemed when that is allowed again) so don’t be scared to think creatively and think about what people might actually truly want rather than what we think we ‘should’ give. That said, here follows my Derbyshire Christmas gift guide. All from small, local independents.

Experiences over Things

Flower school – join award winning florists Tineke in their beautiful studio in historic Haarlem Mill, Wirksworth. Gift vouchers for future workshops can be bought here. Tineke are also selling luxury Christmas wreath kits from £45 including everything you need, and a video tutorial, to create an elegant fresh Christmas wreath in the comfort of your own home.

The Shed – In normal times The Shed would be offering a range of seasonal workshops including wreath making, Christmas calligraphy, Darwin & Gray banner painting, candle making and yoga. If that’s of interest do sign up to their mailing list to hear first about forthcoming events which typically sell out very quickly. You can also ‘shop the shed’ online, including home and lifestyle, kitchen, stationary and wellness products carefully selected from often local artisans. They have a beautifully curated range of boxes and bundles, including ‘The Brew Box’ perfect for tea lovers. You can also buy gift vouchers which can be used to buy any of the lovely products, workshops or events.

Sauced Here offers supermarket convenience yet artisan quality. Everything is hand sourced from 40 Peak District farmers, food and drink producers and local businesses. Even items not made here are bought from village shops where possible. They have a range of hampers and gift packs starting at just £8.99.  Sauced Here also sells gift vouchers for the very best activities and experiences in the Peak District. Learn how to cook traditional Afro-Caribbean food with local legend Stella in the comfort of your own kitchen, buy wine tasting experiences or learn about wine pairings or go guided mushroom foraging. There are also a range of creative, well-being based and physical activities.

Treasured Memories

If your house was on fire, what would you save? For me, it’s always photos and I think I probably value certain photos more than any other physical ‘thing’.

Elizabeth Hailwood Photography – Chesterfield based Elizabeth specialises in beautiful, natural photographs that capture your family as they truly are. She promises to photograph real emotions, real fun and real joy. Prices start at just £40. During lockdown she is also offering digital family illustrations emailed direct to you. These could be turned into a unique Christmas card or printed and sent as a gift. This service starts at just £10 each for up to 4 people and £2 for each additional person, pets are free! During lockdown all gift vouchers include an extra 20% free (eg spend £50 for a £60 voucher).

I can personally recommend Rebecca Waterfield Photography, just over the border in Sutton in Ashfield. Rebecca specialises in photographing children.  After our own shoot in Rebecca’s professional home studio, my own lively toddler asked for weeks after “to go back to Rebecca’s house to play” – I think that’s testament to the calm, cosy feel she created. Her work was excellent – really beautiful, natural images. I also loved the follow-up service. There was absolutely no hard sell but a simple website where you could take your time choosing which images to buy, with prices at a very reasonable £5 per digital image. Rebecca offers a range of seasonal offers and mini shoots, e.g. the Christmas mini shoot from just £35.

Christmas Cards, Decorations and more

Herbert and Rose is based on the art and illustrations of local Ali Scothern who sells a range of prints, notebooks and greetings cards. You can buy any five beautifully illustrated cards from just £10.

Squidge & Peg sell beautiful, often cheeky, hand painted items, including personalised pet baubles for just £7 plus delivery. The original concept started a few years back when Emma’s mum became very ill. She told Emma to quit the job she hated and to do something she loved, so she did! That lead to Emma following her passion of painting and running Urban Flamingo, a gift shop in Chesterfield, which has now sadly closed due to the pandemic. Emma is continuing to paint her way through life, painting anything from shoes to jackets, bags to baubles. All in the memory of her lovely Mum.

Handcraft home Derby based Zoe, sells a range of lovely handmade crafty bits on her Etsy page including custom knitted words, eco-friendly face scrubbies and cake toppers. I particularly love the ‘ho, ho, ho’ knitted wire sign – a gorgeous addition to your Christmas decorations.

If my husband is reading this (hi honey!) there’s nothing more I personally enjoy than a right good pampering. A spa day – or even better, a spa break would be my ideal of heaven. Obviously there are lots of restrictions on spas so it isn’t currently the complete unabashed luxury it once was, but we have to live in hope that one day spas will be back. And for that reason I still think gift vouchers are a great idea. Personally I would LOVE to receive a gift voucher for a spa. I may not get to go soon but I will look forward to it until it happens.

So locally, I would recommend the Garden Secret Spa at Ringwood Hall. It’s small, but perfectly formed. Read my previous review here. They do some great offers too. I haven’t yet had the chance to visit the new luxury Ensana spa at Buxton but it’s named as Spa Hotel of the Year by The Times, so it’s probably a safe bet!

If funds don’t stretch to a full spa day, it’s still possible to gift a pampering session. Support your local salon by buying gift vouchers from them. My recommendations would be The Sanctuary in Chesterfield, Full FX in West Hallam near Ilkeston or Lunula Nails and Beauty in Derby. Lunula specialise in cutting edge nail art so might be one for trendier/younger gift recipients. Again, if my husband is reading this (or anyone else who might be a bit clueless about exactly what to buy from a beauty salon) you can’t go far wrong with a massage, facial or manicure – or let the recipient choice by just buying an amount to spend.

Elsie Moss Botanical sell natural, handcrafted vegan soaps handmade in the traditional cold process by owner Lisa in her studio in Derbyshire. The finest cold pressed oils, skin loving butters, plant based botanicals and steam-distilled essential oils are used to create beautifully gentle, yet luxurious bars of soap that are packaged without plastic. Prices start at just £3 and gift sets at £10.

Me & Thee mugs

Lovely things

Me & Thee is a design lead business set up by local Mum, Maria, that takes quirky Northern and Derbyshire sayings and prints them on to mugs, coasters, prints etc. Take a trip down memory lane with phrases that your Gran might have said. “Be Reyt” is probably the one we all need to cling on to this year (or “Chuffing ‘ell!” depending on your outlook).  The Me & Thee shop has multiple five star ratings on Etsy and can be shopped here or support a local shop (and get gift wrapping and cheaper delivery) by buying at Handmade Design Ashbourne or Shop Indie in Chesterfield.

Rose & Bee Textiles sells beautiful homeware and gifts handmade by owner, Caroline in her Matlock studio. Many of the products use snippets of gorgeous and quintessentially English, Liberty fabrics bended with neutrals for a contemporary feel. Rose & Bee has recently launched personalised Christmas stockings, with a beautiful Liberty monogram and cuff. Choose from 31 beautiful Liberty fabrics and 4 velvets to create a truly personalised stocking that will look stunning in your home. Sign up to her mailing list for 10% off your first order.

Hari and the Gang Derby based Hari and the Gang is a lifestyle brand that encompasses casual clothing with effortless fashion. British made and designed Hari and the Gang is famous for its stylish hoodies and bold prints. Check out their leopard print and rainbow scarf and their cowl neck hoodies.

Hide and Thread is a small, independent furniture business, creating handmade and bespoke furniture from its workshop in the vintage quarter on Dale Rd, Matlock. Visit their Instagram page and you’ll fall in love with their handmade footstools, ottomans, benches and hallstands. Ran by skilled carpenter, Matt and lovely other half, Catherine who runs the shop, keeps their social media up to date and obsesses over fabric.

Spinderella is a music shop in the heart of Matlock, specialising in guitars, records and hi-fi equipment. They’re pleased to offer advice on all of these areas so if you fancy a chat, you’re wondering how to achieve the best sound or need gift giving advice get in touch.

Foodie gifts

Rate Good Brownies Chesterfield locals will be more than familiar with Rate Good Brownies, ran by Amy. They are simply the best brownies and blondies I have ever eaten. In addition to being delicious, Amy is uber creative and never fails to deliver the most creative, witty bakes. Christmas highlights include caramel gingerbread blondies, a glittery Baileys truffle brownie and edible ‘coal’ (rocky road) – for people on the naughty list! Find out more here.

Grandela Artisan Treats sells delicious healthy treats made by the lovely Andela, a Chesterfield based Mum and passionate foodie (and also my NCT mate). Everything is vegan, gluten free, dairy free and refined sugar free so perfect for anyone with allergies or just looking for something a bit more ‘feel good’. Everything is freshly made and without preservatives but the ‘boozy bliss balls’ last three weeks and are beautifully packaged. Check out her socials for more information.

Support your local highstreet

Let’s not forget brick and mortar stores. They need our help more than ever before. Despite being shut for lockdown many lovely shops are still selling online. Many offer gift wrapping and local delivery. My favourites are Design 44 in Derby, Shop Indie and Libby’s in Chesterfield, Bow Boutique in Matlock who have a dedicated online Christmas shop and Handmade Design Ashbourne.

This is a Girl About recommendation. This means that it was not gifted in return for a review but carefully selected by our writer. We only recommend places we absolutely love, and places that we know you’ll love too!

A couple of the businesses have offered previously gifted experiences (Ringwood Hall spa, Lunula Nails & Beauty, Rate Good Brownies and Grandela Artisan Treats) but there was no obligation to include them in this list.
