Delifonseca Dockside – Liverpool

In my office, nothing gets people to commit to a meeting faster than saying lunch will be provided by Delifonseca. Their deli alone gets me more excited than any clothes shop has ever done, and for anyone who had travelled around the Med, a visit to their on-site shop is like scrolling back through your holiday food-porn – but this time you can bring it all home with you.

So when I had the opportunity to try out their new restaurant space at the Docks I jumped at the chance to see how their bigger (and better?) restaurant was looking, and dive into their sample menu.

First things first, the new Delifonseca Dockside is more than double the size of the old restaurant. Always popular, I tended to rule it out as a brunch spot as I thought I’d never get a table (or a least one with enough space for a pram/toddler), but I can see myself becoming a regular to the larger, airier space as not only is there more seating, but the vibe is so much more relaxed. Plus free parking IN THE CITY?? Rarer than a scouse Tory!

Beautiful copper furnishings, velvet seating and lush planting pad out an earthy colour palette of purples and greens, creating a warm and welcoming bolthole from those icy Mersey winds coming in from the waterfront. And I have to mention here that I was seriously impressed with my chair (these are the kind of things that are important to me post-30) which was both stylish and super comfortable… A clever move by the owners?! Invite them in, make them comfy and then feed them up so they never want to leave. And why would you, when there’s NOW A BAR ON SITE too?!

Another new addition, the bar provides the updated space with a designated area to enjoy the expanded drinks menu including a seasonal rotation of cocktails and craft beers, alongside an impressive wine list. We tried a great Sicilian white with our food, and a firey ginger cocktail on arrival – both I would happily drink again. In that chair. (Thank god for Uber.)

And the food was equally impressive. I am a big fan of starters and on my visit these were served up on sharing plates so we could sample a few. I tried Monkfish cheek in squid ink tempura with romesco, toasted almonds and samphire (YUM), burrata with pickled walnut, candied walnut and walnut dressing (heaven) and wild mushrooms with truffle, shaved butternut squash, sage, spinach and squash seeds (can’t argue with truffle.) This was followed by a beautiful salmon fillet with squid ink polenta, salmon bouillabaisse and charred baby leek – really good, plus I’m always impressed when I’m given something new to me (squid ink polenta) that works.

And for the final show-down – literally, as the desserts caused some fighting as we were sharing – tiramisu puff with marsala mascarpone and coffee crumb (think: giant profiterole crossed with Italian classic); Galician cheesecake with plum and damson compote and vanilla ice cream (the creamiest of ice creams); and a white chocolate and pistachio parfait, with pistachio biscotti and a red wine sauce (the one I said I wouldn’t like and then ate it all…)

So would I go back? I’ve already suggested Delifonseca for one of my annual meet-ups but never one to hang about, a brunch stop (with a visit to the deli, a must!) will be happening much sooner than that.
