The Combermere Abbey Estate sits on the Cheshire/Shropshire border conveniently located close to the Welsh Border and within an hour’s drive of Chester, Stoke on Trent, and Shrewsbury. The pretty market towns of Whitchurch and Nantwich are a short drive away and it serves as a great base to explore many fantastic local attractions including, Ironbridge Gorge, Chester Zoo, and Alton Towers.

Our October half-term holiday at Combermere Abbey came about quite by chance after we decided not to travel abroad and amend our plans last minute. Due to the ever-changing situation, we felt more comfortable travelling within our own county and staying relatively ‘local’.  So, after a huge amount of internet research and time spent weighing up our options, we chose a holiday cottage on the Combermere Abbey Estate. This 1000 acre estate includes B+B accommodation in the North Wing and ten holiday cottages within the grounds. Due to some last-minute cancellations, there were a couple of cottages available and we chose the contemporary Callander Cottage housed within the original Coach House for a one week stay.

Luxury Holiday Cottages

This beautiful two-bedroom cottage, named after the current Abbey owner, Sarah Callander Beckett, forms a wider collection of luxury properties within the grounds of Combermere Abbey that sleep between 4 and 10 guests. In more normal times, these serve as convenient overnight lets for wedding guests and form a perfect base for larger groups of friends or family looking to meet for a holiday. The cottages sit within the Stables building and share a communal cobbled courtyard as well as each having their own small outside garden with seating. All the cottages, individual in style, have spectacular views over the parkland and gardens beyond. Within a couple of paces from the rear of the properties, you can access the stunning landscaped Walled and Pleasure Gardens including woodland walks down to the Mere, with wild swimming encouraged! Guests can also take advantage of free bike hire, a tennis court and use of a communal BBQ.

Callander Cottage

Callander Cottage is finished to an extremely high standard; the kitchen is incredibly well equipped (you could easily bake a cake which is normally unheard of in a rental!), the bathroom has one of the best showers we have experienced and the quality of the linen/towels is 5* hotel standard. Prior to our stay, we were contacted to ask if we required a stair gate, highchair, or travel cot. This is always a massive tick when travelling with small children and throughout our stay, we felt very welcome as a family. On arrival, we were greeted by a delicious welcome hamper including the estate’s own plum jam and apple juice as well as breakfast and essential items. Overall, I believe the cost for our stay reflected fantastic value for money, especially when staying for 7 nights (although 2/3/4 night stays are also available). The holiday cottages are also dog friendly and there are sections of the gardens designated to letting them off the lead for exercise.

The North Wing

The B+B accommodation in the North Wing comprises the Salamanca Suite and Bhurtpore Bedroom that benefit from a private entrance and personal butler service. The Salamanca Suite, which also doubles as the Bridal Suite, includes an impressive bathroom featuring a free-standing bath with views out over the Mere and his/her sinks. The suite also includes a separate seating area with original Tudor beams and a workspace for longer stays. The neighbouring Bhurtpore bedroom features beautiful panelling and a cosy Terracotta colour scheme. Although smaller in floor space, this room oozes character with a hidden door into the quirky shower room. Within the North Wing itself, guests can take advantage of a private seating and dining area for use solely by the two bedrooms. This adult-only accommodation would be the perfect place for a romantic countryside breakaway.

Covid Secure Accommodation

With regards to health and safety measures given the current climate, the estate and cottages appear to have everything covered. Throughout the grounds there are hand sanitizing stations at all ‘touch’ points, the cottages are very obviously complying with covid-secure precautions and we felt very reassured throughout our stay. Further to that, Combermere Abbey also prides itself on protecting and preserving the environment for future generations by adopting a ‘green procurement’ policy, using local suppliers and organic/fair trade products where available. Recycling by guests is encouraged, environmentally friendly cleaning products provided within the cottages and a reed bed sewage system in place. The grounds are vast, there is plenty of space to socially distance and it is, in my opinion,  the perfect spot to get away from it all.

This is a Girl About recommendation. This means that it was not gifted in return for a review but paid in full by our writer and the venue had no idea that I was there. We only recommend places we absolutely love, and places that we know you’ll love too!
