REVIEW: City Feast, A Street Food Market in the Heart of Canterbury, Kent

By Kirsty Lavender – 1st August 2020

What I loved about City Feast:

There’s something that just feels fun about street food dining right!? And City Feast was no different! Set right in the heart of Canterbury you can really make a great day or evening of it! City Feast isn’t massive but there are plenty of vendors to choose from and there is something for everyone including some delicious vegetarian options.

Worth paying a babysitter?

Either take the kids and pair it with a fun day out in Canterbury; there’s food for all the family, including ice cream and even dessert waffles.

Or (and this is my preferred option) leave the kids at home, head over for the evening with friends and enjoy the great beers, wines and cocktails on offer!

A relaxed vibe, with friendly staff and a great range of food!

Value for money:

The price for food is set by each vendor but is typical of a street food market. I found the bar to be quite reasonable with cocktails only £7.

City Feast is a brand new Street Food Market situated just off the main high street of Canterbury. I was lucky enough to be invited to the launch night which happened to coincide with the hottest day of the year, so outdoor dining in the cool city streets was a welcome relief! There was plenty of room for social distancing so this is also a great option for those who are not yet comfortable with the idea of going to a restaurant.

Here each weekend until 6th September there are plenty of opportunities to come and visit.

City Feast has selected a small group of vendors but don’t think that this means there won’t be much on offer. You can get anything from Thai, Japanese, Greek and Morrocan. With pizza from wood-fired ovens, vegetarian tacos, and a great range of mouth-watering burgers even the fussiest person will surely find something they like.

We started at the bar where they are serving local offerings; beer from Curious Brew and wine from Chapel Down (my favourite) as well as a range of cocktails. Being pregnant I faked it with a mocktail! The bar accepts cash and cards but while we were there the card machine did keep dropping out due to the signal so you may want to come prepared! (There are cash points nearby)

After we’d built up an appetite we decided to sample the food. Being vegetarians we weren’t disappointed with what was on offer and had a hard time choosing. We will definitely have to come back, especially for the vegan banana blossom and chips served up by Oscar & Bentleys!
We grabbed some halloumi sliders from Mickey’s Gourmet Food while we made our decision and had another drink!
In the end, we went with SilverBirch Fine Foods which had three great vegetarian options. We chose the Vegetarian pulled pork tacos and the mac and chini balls (a mixture of mac n cheese and arancini balls) Both were served up with wild garlic aioli (picked by the vendor himself) and fresh local radish delivered that morning. All of it was delicious and was devoured very quickly!

Unfortunately, we were too full to try any more than this but we did stay for a few more drinks before heading home to relieve the babysitter!

Overall we had a fun time on our first proper evening out since lockdown and we felt relaxed and safe with the measures put in place. The staff were friendly and there was a great summer vibe with a range of food to enjoy!
