RECOMMENDATION | The Chevin Forest – Searching for Fairies & Trolls

13th November 2016

The Chevin Forest in Otley is just moments from our house in Menston, West Yorkshire and is one of those places where we as a family spend many Sundays searching for fairies and trolls, going on bear hunts, building dens and getting very muddy. It’s a great place for blowing the Saturday night red wine-induced cobwebs away too.

Hop over onto the Chevin Forest’s official website and plan your day out in the Forest. It’s a fab place for horse riding, walking, climbing, cycling, den building and of course searching for fairies and trolls (let me know if you find any!!). There’s loads of stuff to download depending on your interests – orienteering maps, hiking guides, a heritage audio trail, info on bridal ways and more.

If, like us, it’s mandatory that one must have a glass of wine and a packet of crisps after a Sunday stroll then pop into The Royalty Pub, which sits at the top of the Chevin and is a great place for six year old wannabe plane spotters – a great view of the runway at Leeds/Bradford Airport can be see from the car park! Personally I prefer the inside of the pub.

Another one of my faves is The Chevin Inn – a short drive away from the Chevin Forest. If you are going eat, do it here. We are regulars, quite simply because the service is on-point, the food is consistently delicious (and hot!) and it’s very kid friendly.  I urge you to try their side dish of sweet potato fries with chilli jam and feta cheese. A damn sight more delicious that a £1.50 bag of ponsy crisps and only £3 a (big) bowl).

If you have a little more time to spare then venture down the hill into the historic Yorkshire market town of Otley where there is an array of places to eat and drink. Here’s the link to my blog on Otley

Children’s Wellbeing | Kids these days – they’ve got it made – or have they?

I’m a primary school teacher and I’m a mum to a beautiful, bright and bubbly six-year-old. I witness the ups and downs of wellbeing in children every day. Every parent faces the same dilemma – how to ensure the wellbeing of our children – particularly from a mental health perspective in a world that is more pressured than ever in more ways than one.

Anyone who fancies themselves a bit of a sleuth. If you’re an armchair detective and work out “whodunnit” before Poirot even twiddled his moustache or love watching real crime documentaries then this CSI Experience in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire is for you. Vouchers don’t have to be bought in pairs but I would say that to get the most out of the experience you’d be best off going with likeminded, crime-fighting friend.

REVIEW | Kelham Island Food Tour in “The Shoreditch of the North” – Sheffield

If you love food and don’t know Sheffield very well then the Kelham Island Food Tour could be the one for you. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon, filled with many tasty delights whilst discovering new places around the much loved industrial part of town. The first time I ventured away from my city-centre haunts was shortly after finishing uni, when we discovered the Fat Cat pub and (more importantly) £2 pints of ale. It dumbfounded us that we’d never even heard of this part of town, so finding such an amazing place to drink after four years living in Sheffield was quite a late discovery!
