DAY OUT RECOMMENDATION – Bombay Sapphire Gin Tour & Distillery in Hampshire

By Sarah Frost – 4th August 2020

The Home of Bombay Sapphire:

Bombay Sapphire is one of the world’s most loved gins. And it’s produced right on my doorstep in North Hampshire. I have visited several times since it opened in 2014 and there is always something new to see, even if it’s the latest seasonal cocktail menu. This is a great place to visit as a couple, group of friends or a special occasion. I have also witnessed a hen party having a fantastic time there.

There’s a variety of experiences, depending on your budget. My favourite is the Cocktail Masterclass. In pairs, you make three cocktails and learn lots of tips and tricks. The staff are very enthusiastic and informative which really helps to make it a fun experience. Hint: at some point they may ask a question such as ‘Is it anyone’s birthday?’ and I thoroughly recommend throwing your hand up immediately to win a free drink!

The ‘Self-Discovery Tour’ is a great way to see everything on a smaller budget and is included in the ticket. Start by taking a walk around the stunning greenhouses, which showcase examples of the botanicals which flavour the gin. There’s also a timeline showing Bombay Sapphire’s history.

You then enter the Smelling Room, where you can smell a range of the botanical, and punch holes in a card… if you like the scent. While some may be familiar (think cinnamon, coriander) there are more than a few unusual scents to be discovered. When you turn over the card, you’ll reveal which cocktail you are likely to enjoy based on the aromas you liked. The results may surprise you.

Next, you’ll get a guided tour through two of the distilleries. It only takes 15 minutes, but you will learn all about how they make gin and get to try some neat from the source too.

The final stop on the experience is the bar. This is particularly lovely in the sunshine but you can do this tour in all weathers. A cocktail is included in your ticket, so try the one your punch card suggested! Or choose something else from the menu – I would always recommend the ‘Laverstoke’ as the ingredients change seasonally. And if you’re a designated driver, there’s a nice touch, they’ll give you a gin and tonic in a bag to take home with you to enjoy later.

Overall, visiting Bombay Sapphire is a great afternoon out, for adults of all ages. You don’t even need to like gin! I’ve successfully converted three people now as there is a range of cocktails for everyone. There is a gift shop where you can purchase branded glassware and limited-edition gin. The newly refurbished café sells delicious hot and cold lunch options from a range of local producers.

Update: There are restrictions following COVID-19 and you are unable to visit just the bar. You will need to pre-book a tour, but it’s worth it!

Please let me know what you think if you visit.
