REVIEW | Bank House Bar, Sheffield
I peeled my threenager off my limb and avoided answering my husband’s concerns of who is doing the 3am feed, because for the first time this year I was going out on a Friday night – to the official opening of Bank House in Hathersage. Dress and lipstick on, I jumped into my Fun-Time-Friday-friend’s car and drove off into the sunset. Literally.
Despite Hathersage only being 10 miles from Sheffield city centre, you feel like you are in the depths of the Peak District. The short drive from Sheffield offers incredible panoramic views of the beautifully scenic hills and Hathersage’s cobbled paths and bunting provide a nostalgic entrance into the village.
Well known for its outdoors shops, we’ve spent many weekends wandering around the village, often leaving with a spork or an equally pointless gadget to keep Emily occupied whilst we coo over the fancy outdoor kit on display. But, there has never been somewhere directly within Hathersage to eat or drink that appeals to us, so we have often driven elsewhere to fill our bellies.
But now there is no need. Formerly a historic bank, Bank House provides an elegant place to drink and dine in Hathersage that aims provide a menu that offers “a playful take on British cuisine with broad European influences”.
The grand entrance through the unusual corner door takes you into the cocktail bar and social dining area, which has a relaxed but classy feel to the space. Enjoying our complimentary glass of bubbles, Fun-Time-Friend and I wiggled our way through the crowd to explore the other floors of Bank House, whilst sampling a few tasty nibbles of crispy calamari and salted chicken wings that past us by.
The dining upstairs provides a more exclusive feel to Bank House, with a private dining room for ten people and another room with seven-or-so tables for people to enjoy the menu away from vibrancy downstairs. We sat down to soak up the atmosphere and welcomed the plate of cured meats presented to us. Bank House has something for everyone. There are three menus: food (brunch, tapas, pizza, desserts), drinks and gin. I have never seen such an extensive gin menu…. One Hundred and Five Gins! If that’s not a good enough reason to go try it out, then I don’t know what is.
Bank House has been sympathetically designed, reinstating many of the building’s original features but has incorporated a mix of modern and vintage furnishings to provide a unique feel to the bar. Along with the subtle touches of local artwork and nods to the area’s industrial heritage, it is clear that a lot of thought has been put into the décor. For this neck of the woods, Bank House provides a relaxed but unique dining experience with plenty of choice on the menu. From the little bits that tantalised my taste buds I am keen to go back and sample more of what their menu has to offer.

It’s a fun filled day out for the whole family. There are stacks of outdoor play areas, which the kids cannot get bored of, but also some really good indoor/sheltered activities that means even on your typical autumnal Yorkshire day you can have a really good day out.
Hidden in the heart of the East Village, part of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and just a stones throw from Stratford station, are a handful of restaurants and bars. And right in the middle is Darkhorse bar and restaurant. It’s described on their website as a ‘modern European restaurant with Italian and Spanish influenced food wrapped in a British attitude’.
