RECOMMENDATION | Baby Groups Birmingham – Baby Glow Bugs

By Vanessa Woollatt – 31st August 2019

Finding the right baby group for you and why we love Baby Glow Bugs in Birmingham Becoming a new mom is daunting. Although you plan for every possible event, nothing can prepare you for the reality.

If having to care for a tiny baby with no prior knowledge and no handbook for the first time wasn’t enough there is then the inevitable external pressures that come with it from those around you. Are you breastfeeding? Will you be sending her to the nursery? You will be doing baby-lead weaning, won’t you? And perhaps the most daunting for me “are you taking her to baby groups?”.

You see I am quite possibly the most perfect example of an extroverted introvert there ever was. It was assumed by all who knew me that I would be attending every baby group in the West Midlands, but the reality was the complete opposite. During the initial few months of my daughter’s life, I would keep her as close to me as possible, only venturing out with close family and select friends to places I was highly familiar with, potential exit strategy engrained firmly in my mind. Save & Exit

I longed to be one of those parents with a close group of fellow ‘new mom’ friends you see in coffee shops and soft play centres. I was the first of my friends to have a baby and I’m from a very small family and as a result I put off signing up to any baby groups for fear of cliquey moms and perfect babies. Heaven forbid my daughter might cry!

Don’t get me wrong, I emailed groups. I even went to a health visitor and asked her to write me a list of every local place and then proceeded to research them in detail but never took that next step of signing up.

Until I found Baby Glow Bugs…
The one place that kept jumping out at me throughout my research was baby glow bugs, a local glow in the dark baby group suitable for children aged 0-18 months. Finally, the guilt was overwhelming, and I decided to take the plunge and am I glad I did.

The reasonably priced group is a 45-60 minute long session divided into three parts. Set in a dark room lit with stunning light features, flashing toys and twinkling stars its a baby sensory haven. The divine smell of lavender just adds to the relaxing environment, far from the screaming anxiety-inducing mayhem I expected from these groups.

The first thing I noticed was how many mothers were there on their own, this put me at ease immediately and there was so much to keep both adults and little ones occupied that I had no chance to feel nervous. The sessions begin with some songs (including the oh so catchy ‘hello’ song, prepare to be singing it in the shower for the rest of the week) where you are given props to entertain your child with as you go.

Then it’s on to the sensory stations, from glowing ball pits to neon fish tanks there is so much to keep your baby interested, you can join in with other mothers as much or as little as you like. The final 10 minutes sees a stunning glow in the dark show (with accompanying music), bubbles and a couple more songs. Each week to a different theme such as under the sea, the weather, in the garden and many more.

Having attended now for seven months I am a somewhat veteran and often get approached by new moms on the way in or during the session, each one just as apprehensive as I once was. My daughter is now 13 months old and the oldest there, but she still enjoys herself as much as the youngest children (some just weeks old).

It will soon by time for me to find her somewhere for older children and a part of me is gutted. The lady who runs the group couldn’t be more kind and helpful and always takes the time to speak to each and everyone who attends. She set the group up just three years ago and it is clearly going from strength to strength and has several more groups in and around the Birmingham areas.

My only regret is not starting sooner.
