ApéBars Café at Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden, Cheshire

By Jenny Schippers – 18th September 2020
What I loved about ApéBars Café:

This quaint family-run café/bistro sits within the glasshouses at Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden, situated between Appleton and Grappenhall near Warrington. Originally founded by Thomas Parr in 1830, there was once home a Mansion, landscaped gardens, and farmland on the site.  Although most of the estate no longer stands, the glasshouses and Kitchen Garden have been sympathetically restored thanks to Heritage Lottery Funding. Nowadays, the Walled Gardens are a peaceful escape and a quiet place to reflect, take a walk, and enjoy some lunch.

Opening Times/Booking Information:

The café is open Friday 9 am-4 pm, Saturday and Sunday 10 am-5 pm. The delightful breakfast menu is served until midday and then the lunch menu thereafter. Throughout the day a selection of homemade cakes, Afternoon Teas, and hot/cold drinks are also available.

Grappenhall Heys Walled Gardens is also open to the public Tuesday-Thursday 1-4 pm although the café is closed.

Booking for ApéBars is advisable. For further details please visit their Facebook page here

This family-friendly establishment has an informal, laid back vibe. There is plenty of outdoor seating overlooking the delightful Kitchen Garden as well as indoor seating available including toilets. There are excellent Covid-secure measures in place including a one-way system, social distancing, staff in PPE, and table service.

After you have enjoyed breakfast or lunch at the café there are countless walking trails of various distances around the estate to suit all ages. The paths outside of the Walled Gardens are perfect for prams/bikes and scooters. There are ornamental ponds, picnic benches, and grassed areas to suit little ones. Across the road from the Walled Gardens is an excellent children’s play area. Parking is roadside and free of charge.
