RESTAURANT RECOMMENDATION | Ambiente Tapas, Fossgate York

By Laura Shepherd – 12th June 2020

What I loved about Ambiente Tapas:

A lively atmosphere set in a stylish industrial feel restaurant only a short walk from the city centre.

An open theatre kitchen in a spacious restaurant – perfect for larger parties if you’re heading into the city after. Or for families with their children in tow!

Setting the scene:

Nestled in one of the city’s hidden gems of Fossgate packed with independent shops, cocktail bars and restaurants, Ambiente offers gourmet tapas in a friendly and relaxed environment. Serving locally sourced food, the restaurant sits perfectly in one of York’s unique streets. With a sister restaurant in Goodramgate, Ambiente is well established in York. You’ll also find an open kitchen on the ground floor, with a stylish and modern décor.

My love for tapas first originated when I lived in Sheffield, it’s great that you can order an array of different plates of food and taste a variety of different dishes. The waiters usually recommend you order 3 – 4 dishes per person or perhaps a couple more if you’re hungry. My first visit to Ambiente Fossgate was for a friend’s surprise 30th birthday and I remember having some of the best tapas I have ever tasted. Therefore, I decided to book a table for me and my fiancé to enjoy a treat out in the city, having only recently just moved in.

We arrived to a very warm welcome from a waitress who showed us to our table upstairs, complete with contemporary décor and decorative lighting, it made the place immediately atmospheric and romantic. With an industrial feel, stylish furnishings and a wonderful ambience it made us really soak up the atmosphere and want to stay longer.

My fiancé and I ordered a glass of red wine each. We usually go for Merlot if we are having red, however the waitress advised us to go for the House red, we decided to go with her recommendation and we weren’t disappointed.

We ordered a variety of different tapas with a combination of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes. The menu is extensive and has so much to choose from, it’s also straightforward because it is divided into easy to navigate sections, which is a big ‘yes’ from me! Dishes are split into Meat, Fish, Vegetarian, Sharing Boards and Paella which makes choosing so much simpler. The two of us had 6 dishes and that was plenty, we were told that our dishes would come as and when they were ready, which was fine by us.

First to arrive was the Mussels which were steamed in a white wine and garlic sauce, they were simply delicious and didn’t last for very long on the plate! Next up we had our tiger prawns, which were fried in a tempura batter and came with a side of aioli. They were packed full of flavour and were extremely tasty.

Swiftly, two more dishes were brought to our table; the Secreto De Cerdo (£6.95) a fantastically tender pig shoulder which was served with potatoes, along with the Brocheta De Pollo Y Chistorra (£6.95) which was a chicken and chorizo sausage kebab served with pickled red onions, yoghurt and flatbread. Next came our Judias Verdes (£4.50) which is simply just green beans fried in garlic with sundried tomatoes and pine nuts. They had tons of flavour and were lovely and crunchy.

Last to arrive was our Patatas Braves (£4.25) a Spanish classic of roast and fried new potatoes which came with aioli and spicy tomato sauce. We tucked in and every dish was delicious, especially the Brocheta De Pollo Y Christorra (the chicken and chorizo kebab)

The service was faultless. We had a couple of waiters who were very knowledgeable about the food and with a good attention to detail.

We decided on sharing a couple of desserts, we went for the Millionaires chocolate brownie and the cheese board. A generous serving of chocolate brownie with a caramel and chocolate topping, it tasted divine with a good helping of vanilla ice cream. We also tried a selection of Spanish cheeses, which came with a variety of crackers, grapes and celery. Nothing quite tops dinner like a good cheeseboard and it was one of the highlights of the meal. We left very happy having enjoyed a diverse range of food and we will definitely be back soon.

This is a Girl About recommendation. This means that it was not gifted in return for a review but paid in full by our writer and the venue had no idea that I was there. We only recommend places we absolutely love, and places that we know you’ll love too!
