A unique, fun and out of this world experience in Hackney

By Lindsey Roberts – 23 August 2020

Why I love it: A unique experience and great fun

Is it worth getting an Uber for? YES

Expect: An out of world experience, lots of fun, mind-blowing!

Value for money: 9/10

Setting the scene:

Okay, so traveling for many isn’t possible right now. But you can see the world in a unique, fun, and out of this world experience without leaving East London. And that’s what I did a couple of weeks ago. I saw The Christ Redeemer in Rio, had a dance-off with my friends, and ran around a virtual world.

It sounds like I’ve been drinking but, I assure you I haven’t. It was what I did in my first virtual reality experience at London’s most immersive virtual reality arcade, the ‘Otherworld’.

I didn’t know what to expect. I just knew that we’d have individual pods and be socially distant but together. In our current COVID-19 situation that suited me perfectly.

We visited as a party of nine for my friend’s birthday. In keeping with its name; once you’re in your pod, you’re transported to the ‘Otherworld’. You can see and hear your friends as avatars and explore this parallel universe together. Each ‘immersion room’ combines VR with heat, wind, and rumble effects to give that fully immersive experience and it was SURREAL!

You’re given a headset and handheld controls to move and then off you go! There are multiplayer games or solo adventures. And then you can go and check out the four corners of the world thanks to Google Earth (which is how I got to Rio).

We had an hour session that went so quickly. It was sensory overload by the end! Thankfully there was a bar open afterward to relax and you can redeem some of your ‘coins’ that you can win whilst you’re in The Otherworld – a definite incentive to try and beat your friends!

Overall I had a lot of fun. I would recommend heading there if you’re looking for something different to do with friends!

From a COVID-19 perspective, it’s well organised. All staff are in masks and they clean all pods thoroughly in between uses (which they did anyway, but good to know). For more details, check out their COVID page here.

Prices are from £12 for 40 minutes and from £25 per 1 hour 10 minutes. Costs do vary dependent on on-peak and off-peak hours. Take a look at their website or visit their Instagram.

This is a Girl About recommendation. This means that it was not gifted in return for a review but paid in full by our writer and the venue had no idea that I was there. We only recommend places we absolutely love, and places that we know you’ll love too!
