There are so many fun and free things to do across West Yorkshire, whether you’re looking for a day out with the family or to meet a friend, there are some fabulous options across the county.

Each of these attractions will allow you to spend hours learning, exploring and most importantly having fun!

Here are 7 free days out in West Yorkshire

The Royal Armouries

The Royal Armouries in Leeds is a firm favourite family day out. It hosts the United Kingdom’s national collection of arms and armour. There are over 75000 objects in its collection! You can catch live combat demonstrations for some close-up action and discover some world history at the same time. The Royal Armouries are within walking distance from the city centre or you can travel by boat to arrive in style!

National Science and Media Museum

The National Science and Media Museum is in the centre of Bradford and allows all members of the family to explore the history of science and media. Bradford is a World UNESCO City of Film and as such there are galleries and exhibitions around photography, film and television. You can take part in some live experiments and watch some of your favourite old-school TV shows! Within the museum, there are also three cinema screens (charges apply) including an IMAX theatre.

Bradford Industrial Museum

The Industrial Museum in Bradford allows you to step back in time to see some of its permanent displays of textile machinery, steam power, engineering and motor vehicles. The museum used to be a mill and you can explore Moorside House where the Mill Manager lived and visit the Mill-workers’ terraced houses which are dressed to reflect three different periods during the Industrial Revolution.

The Piece Hall

The Piece Hall is the centrepiece of Halifax. The unique Grade I listed building dates back to 1779 and was restored and reopened in 2017. There is something for everyone to enjoy from independent shops, bars, restaurants and cafes. There are also often live events and pop-ups held within the Piece Hall square itself.

Pontefract Castle

Pontefract Castle dates back to 1070 and was once a fearsome Yorkshire fortress. You can enjoy a walk around the castle grounds, there is a children’s play area and make sure you pay a visit to the Liquorice Cafe. You can also learn about the history of the castle and visit the gift shop!

Salts Mill

Salts Mill in the UNESCO village of Saltaire was once a bustling woollen mill built by Sir Titus Salt and opened in 1853. Today you can visit the Mill for the David Hockney exhibition, to visit one of the many independent shops or head to Salts Diner for lunch.

The Hepworth Museum

The Hepworth at Wakefield opened its gallery in 2011 and is named after Wakefield artist Barbara Hepworth. The gallery has exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. Whilst there you can also walk around the Hepworth Wakefield Garden
