3 MUST-VISIT VILLAGES IN WEST YORKSHIRE

3 Must-Visit Villages in West Yorkshire

Yorkshire is full of stunning villages but my heart lies with West Yorkshire. There are hundreds of pretty villages with the backdrop of beautiful Yorkshire all with their own history and unique styles. In the last few months I’ve visited all of these (some multiple times) so it seemed fitting to include them in the list.

Many of the villages have lots to do, independent cafes and shops plus they have locations that would stand out on the best travel bloggers Instagram feed.

3 Must-Visit Villages in West Yorkshire

Saltaire

The majority of the village of Saltaire was built by Sir Titus Salt as homes for the textile workers who worked in the iconic Salts Mill. Today, it is a World UNESCO Heritage Site. The mill has been transformed into a museum which includes a David Hockney exhibition. Hockney is originally from Bradford and much of his art was inspired by Yorkshire. Salts Mill also has independent shops, a large book shop and 2 cafes.

Salts Mill is situated next to the Leeds Liverpool Canal and the River Aire is also nearby, as is Roberts Park.

For independent shops, there are plenty to chose from on both Victoria Road and then at the top of the village. A leisurely stroll around Saltaire on a sunny day with a stop off at either The Boathouse or Salt Beer Factory which both have outside seating always makes for a delightful afternoon.

The annual Saltaire Festival which usually takes place over two weeks in September is always great fun, with live music and stalls. Plus at Christmas Saltaire hosts its own Living Advent Calendar.

For a small village, there is always plenty to do in iconic Saltaire.

Haworth

Famous for being home to the Bronte sisters and their inspiration for many of their literature works such a Wuthering Heights, Haworth is a beautiful village. If you have an interest in the Brontes and literary history you can visit their Bronte Parsonage to see where the family once lived.

The parsonage is at the top of Main Street which is an iconic cobbled hill filled with independent businesses. There are shops, cafes and pubs – You really can’t go wrong. From pies from Hunters of Haworth to beers at the Haworth Steam Brewery and sweets at Mrs Beighton’s. There’s something for everyone in Haworth.

You can even step back into history by travelling to and from Haworth on the Worth Valley Railway Steam Train which was also featured in the famous Railway Children.

Haworth is surrounded by the mystical moors for wonderful walks into the countryside.

Holmfirth

Holmfirth sits in the heart of Holme Valley and makes another great base for walking to see more of the Yorkshire Countryside.

Holmfirth is nestled under the iconic Holme Moss, famous for featuring in bike races, it’s an iconic hill for many cyclists.

The village of Holmfirth is most famous for being the setting of the famous TV show, Last of the Summer Wine. There are nods to its famous characters such as Sid’s Cafe and the Wrinkled Stocking (referencing Nora Batty’s infamous tights).

You might also be surprised to discover Holmfirth has its own Vineyard. The vineyard is situated in the hills surrounding the village and has incredible views. You can also do a wine tour to learn more about wine made in Yorkshire.

There is a good choice of restaurants and bars in the village including Lou & Joe’s for an awesome tasting burger and Oscars Wine Bar.

These 3 West Yorkshire villages are all picture perfect and have so much to offer for all of the family. Whether you like to go for walks, enjoy Yorkshire food or visit a traditional pub or two!
