10 of the prettiest picnic spots in Surrey

prettiest picnic spots in Surrey

With the promise of warmer and brighter days on the horizon, and ‘alfresco dining’ becoming the latest buzz words of 2021, the notion of romantic quintessence for the English picnic feels like utopia.  Why not take your family to one of the prettiest picnic spots in Surrey (provided you live locally) and immerse yourself in the countryside among a sea of flora and fauna? With plenty of space for children to roam free and the opportunity to be undisturbed as we reconnect with our loved ones, picnics are going be more popular than ever this year.

To me, the prettiest picnic spots in Surrey are those which offer seclusion together with a captivating outlook. Whether that’s a breath-taking view, a duck pond or distant hustle and bustle, all make for a day out that will create amazing memories for all to cherish.

Current regulations state that we can enjoy picnics with our family bubbles, or with one other person. This is due to change on 29th March when two households can meet, or six friends from independent households.

Before I share my list of the prettiest picnic spots in Surrey, it would be remiss of me not to share some incredible local suppliers who can do all the hard work for you. Here are just and handful, don’t forget we also have numerous farm shops selling home grown produce which are not only magnificent to taste, but by shopping local we can reduce our carbon footprint and our look after our county’s sustainability.

The prettiest picnic spots in Surrey

  1. Tillingborne River, Middle Street,  Shere GU5 9HF

The chocolate box village of Shere dates back to the ninth century and is bursting at the seams with character and charm. There are beautiful views around every corner so wherever you decide to lay your picnic, the outlook will be scenic.

  1. Bushy Park, Hampton Court Road, Hampton, TW12 2EJ

Well regarded for its delightful gardens, streams and ponds, vast fields, roaming herds of deer and an abundance of wildlife, a stroll around Bushy Park is a very pleasant way to spend the day. The outstanding children’s playground with its large sandpit is a guaranteed crown pleaser.

  1. Abinger Hammer

Take fishing nets, a kite or a ball and spend the day soaking up the picture-perfect scenes in the small village Abinger Hammer. The stream affords hours of laid-back fun for little ones, there is also an adventure playground and a tearoom for ice cream should the weather be balmy.

  1. Box Hill, Tadworth, KT20 7LB

The highest point of Box Hill is frequently quoted as offering some best views in Surrey. At the heart of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Box Hill benefits from a stunning array of plants and wildlife. Do look out for the Adonis blue butterfly which is often spotted here. It can get busy here in warmer months so do pick your spot carefully.

  1. Frensham Great Pond, near Farnham

Surrey’s only beach, inland of course, but Frensham Great Pond offers just as much fun as a trip to the seaside. Enjoy a walk around the lake, paddle in the water or build sandcastles; lay your blanket and enjoy a day out.

  1. Esher Commons

Spanning a vast area between Esher, Cobham, Oxshott and Westend you will have no shortage of scenic spots to choose from. With open ground and woodland trails, not to mention numerous ponds, you can spend hours here enjoying the scenery.

  1. West End Park

Why not spend the morning fruit picking at Garson’s Farm ready for you to enjoy over lunch a short walk away at West End Park. The pretty duck pond on the village green is home to a number of ducks which provide much entertainment for little ones. There is also play equipment at the recreation ground for all age groups.

  1. Pirbright village green

Surrey is teaming with pretty villages, many of which have equally pretty village greens. To me, Pirbright offers one of the prettiest picnic spots in Surrey. Surrounded on two sides by attractive housing, two great pubs and a handful of independent shops, and on another by woodland, the duck pond is just one of the highlights here. The playground beside the village hall is reminiscent of my childhood but with some modern additions, well looked after and well maintained. Look out for The Waffle Station, a 1920s tram serving unbelievably good waffles, something of a local treasure!

  1. Stoke Park, Guildford, Nightingale Road, GU1 1ER, or Castle Gardens

Green flag award winning Stoke Park is Guildford’s largest and most popular park with plenty of facilities for a great day out; a 1930 paddling pool, children’s play area, crazy golf, fitness trail and skate park to name but a few (check the website for the latest opening details).   Most of the original park and woodland have remained unchanged since its creation in the eighteenth century. The original walled rose garden now encloses tennis courts together with beautiful floral displays and a sensory garden. Should you prefer something a little smaller but equally beautifully formed, Castle Gardens in the middle of town offer stunning views of the city and perfectly manicured lawns and flower beds.

  1. Denbies Hillside, Ranmore Common Road, near Dorking, Surrey, RH5 6SR

The dramatic chalk escarpment with its south facing slopes are the perfect place to feel the warm spring sunshine. Peppered with woodlands and grasslands, there is no shortage of wildlife activity, do remember to bring your binoculars and breathe in the outstanding views. There is a designated picnic area in Steers Field which can be accessed from the main car park.

Enjoy!
